Has anyone bought this?
WOW
Ace - May 23, 2007 07:22 AM (GMT)
I've seen a magician performed it on TV. After performing the host wanna check the gimmick, but the magician don't let them inspect lol
Unless you have a way to let the audience inspect the gimmick, there is not much point performing this. Cos the audience will want to inspect the gimmick after seeing such a strong effect.
A similar effect can be achieve just using shapshifter. It don't require any gimmick and it ends clean.

Ace, you need to see it with your own eyes in person to feel the effect of the wrong card changing into your SIGNED card.
It's unlike shapeshifter, where there is lots of movement and the need to clean up, and the card just changes into another card suddenly instead of gradually.
For Masuda's WOW, the wrong card visibly melts into your signed card, and you can see the change occur gradually while the card and the plastic sleeve rests on your open face-up palm.
I agree that requests for inspection of the gimmick can be a potential problem, but you can show the plastic sleeve to be clear and empty before and after performing.
I just think it's a waste to put off such an effect just because it's gimmicked and you can't hand it out for inspection, and furthermore, to compare it with shapeshifter.

Yes, I can see how visual the change is. It is more visual than the shapeshifter and it has less hand movement.
But I also see the reaction of the host when that magician perform the trick on TV. At first the whole crowd just go nuts, even the host. But when the magician don't let them inspect the gimmick, you can see the "oh i know there is something wrong with that case look" on the face of the host. It significantly reduce the impact of the effect.
It would be nice if they provide a normal case so that we can s***** it and hand the thing out to be examine. Then this would be a real strong effect.
Both WOW and shapeshifter have their own pros and cons. WOW is much more visual, but you cannot inspect the gimmick. Shapeshifter is less visual but ends clean. It depends on what you are more comfortable with.
Although shapeshifter ( i mean the one handed shapeshifter) is not as visual as WOW, it is one of the most visual colour change that you can do with sleight of hand. I don't think there is anything wrong to compare this brilliant move with WOW.

We (Jerome, Jack, Shade & myself) managed to catch WOW live in Singapore recently. The reactions form the lay people are totally indescribable. The Magic to it all is that a wrong card is shown and the spectator's SIGNED card MELTS into view and thus given back to the spectator. That's a totally beautiful moment to savor.
However, a Shapeshifter (single or both hands) is basically just a colour change. There are movements to the card in the magician's hand. Though magical as well, cos people see a change, I guess the reactions would differ a little. One is more magical than shocking and the other more shocking than magical.
Having said that, sometimes it is prefered to end clean and than a gimmick wouldn't be an option after all.
My 2 cents worth.

Effects like this kind requires a certain level of audience control, in a sense, if the crowd is strong and you finish the effect, You are left with the option of it being inspected or not.
In my opinion, if you don't want it to be inspected, while the audience is wowing with the effect, take the gimmick and throw into your pocket without hestitation. The moment you finish it. Any moment of hestitation make them want to check the gimmick. This is same for other gimmick stuffs, like decks, once you finish it, you wont hold on to the deck like its okie, you should take the box, keep it while the audience is saying, "how you do that". Alternatively, if they really want to see that gimmick again, take out a "gimmicked gimmick" one, that is real to them. Like doing a deck S**tch, just do the same to the gimmick.
This effect by hook, is stronger than shapeshifter, the visual power is there. Its a double edge sword effect, the way you do the clean up makes you or breaks you.

I like the effect when I saw it on youtube, but the same question came to my mind. This effect will almost have the spectator asking to examine it. Is there a way to get a non-gimmick card holder and switch it?

Wow, thats amazing. I have seen a taiwanese magician performing it on TV. It is really amazing when you personally see the "wrong"card melts into your sign card.
Well, shapeshifter is just a move to be executed and cannot be performed so many times but the effect of seeing the WOW is totally amazing.
bigbadwolf - May 23, 2007 03:19 PM (GMT)
Its expensive. Wish I had one.
Hell of a visual effect.
Jlowhy - May 23, 2007 03:49 PM (GMT)
You can buy another WOW, remove the "essential" part and then use it as the gimmickless switch. But that essentially means you are buying 2 WOW and destroying one of them. I know that there has been someone from The Magic Cafe that did something like that to accomplish a particular effect.
Ace - May 23, 2007 04:18 PM (GMT)
Yup, that is one way. If I’m getting the gimmick I’ll get 2 as well.
The more impossible the change looks, the higher the chances of audience wanting to inspect it.
Like what you can see, this is one hell of a visual card change effect. I hope to secure the reputation of this trick by handing out the case to let people examine . I don't want the audience to say "Must be that thing he kept in his pocket!!" For some reasons audience will tend to remember that more than the impossible looking card change they just witnessed.
joeltay81 - May 23, 2007 04:18 PM (GMT)
Might not be easy to s***** if you are going to have the signed card inside the plastic. Any idea how to overcome this problem?
Ace - May 23, 2007 04:20 PM (GMT)
Can try doing this at the off beat. Since the attention will be on the signed card, there should be enough time to s**** the gimmick.
joeltay81 - May 23, 2007 04:25 PM (GMT)
But shouldn't the signed card be in the s****hed plastic at the end? (If you are going to hand it our for examination) If you can't duplicate the signature, it will be hard to remove the card and re-insert it into the non-gimmick.
Ace - May 23, 2007 04:35 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure how the gimmick works.
But from the video I can see that the magician removes the signed card and put the case aside. So I suppose you can do the same thing, give the card out for people to check the signature. When they are checking you can do the s*****.
Jlowhy - May 24, 2007 01:52 AM (GMT)
You can remove the their card from WOW and ask for a verification that it is indeed their card. In the meantime, keep your WOW in your pocket and pretend to be preparing for a next card effect.
If they ask to check out the WOW, just take out the altered one and let them check it.
LarryDK - May 24, 2007 02:18 AM (GMT)
Guys, Please be senstive of what you write in the post. No one knows what the excat gimmick is, thus, its better not to lead people to think the gimmick is that gimmick.
Even if you know the effect, brought the effect and commented here. Take note that there is lurkers here that come and go. Its not good to talk too much into the stuff that willl lead to exposure. :)
phsycofreak - May 30, 2007 02:12 AM (GMT)
i had asked for this from NING a long time back , unfortunately she did not have any.

You can probably only get them exclusively at MJM Magic. Think they're the only authorised retailers.
Reuben_Wong - September 2, 2007 11:13 AM (GMT)
Perhaps the question to ask is...
"Would you buy this at its price of about $75?"

I recently received a newsletter email from a local magic shop. They have stocks for WOW. Its also going for around $70 odd, but I have my reservations about its authenticity.
