Title: Identity Fraud

jcsum - June 12, 2007 03:02 AM (GMT)
Hi,

This is magic-related because the incidents involve magic-related websites.

Just want to inform all that someone(s) has been posting and sending messages on-line but using/ signing off with my name. They are using the Internet to hide under the cloak of anonymity to tarnish other's name due to jealousy and personal insecurity because they are unable to achieve success or credibility. While these individuals feel that it creates negativity towards me, they just have no idea how poorly this reflects on them.

One case has happened to a webpage owned by David Lai from Malaysia, an excellent magician from Malaysia. He did the right thing by alerting me to the fact.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time someone has assumed my name to send out 'negative' messages. While I've come to accept that society is tainted by such individuals, it is nevertheless an annoyance. I'm reporting the matter to CID Technology Crimes Division and trying to secure IP addresses in order to pursue legal action.

For the record, I do not make one line comments of any kind in public forums, blogs, network pages etc. My posts are always substantial in length and any opinion/ comment I make is justified and backed up with facts or educated observations.

All my e-mail correspondents are addressed from my conceptmagic.biz e-mail account. I do not have any hotmail, yahoo, g-mail etc accounts.

If you see or receive a suspicious message apparently signed off by me, please let me know asap.

Thanks for your time.

JC, you know the first impression of me seeing the thread?

I thought you are talking about Daniel Garcia's Fraud. :off:

Jokes aside, neverthless, this often happens on the net, but I am surprised that magician line will also be affected, well, this shows how popular you are now.

Also, many of us have seen your writings and your speaking style, which allows us to justify which is the real you. :) The good thing is, this has not happen in SMC yet.

Hope that the loser will be caught soon, and know that he is playing with fire. (He sure is not afraid that JC Sum will vanish him)

How I hope maybe some day people would use my name. Means I'm famous enough.

Jlowhy - June 12, 2007 05:25 AM (GMT)
Uh..I wouldn't mind if people used my name to quote me or as a form of creditation like in effects and sleights or in a way of praise. That's when you've attained a certain achievement, etc.

But to have one's name being used as fraud is absolutely disgusting and abhorrent. It's a pain to have someone else parading as you and giving you a bad name.

I'm so sorry to hear that something like that had to happen to you JC. Unfortunately, it's something that can happen and is probably not unexpected given how poorly regulated the internet is.

Lols, I also thought it was a review of Daniel Garcia's Fraud. Anyways, a lot of fraud is going online and it can't seems to be stopped. Even if the person is using your name to post something positive, its also not nice. Hope whoever did that knows what he is doing. Don't worry, the fraud won't really tarnish your reputations. People will just delete that email or post because its common sense that if they never email you, why would you email them for no reason? So, just relax and leave them to the police. Take Care!

This is really unfortunate... I guess there are just some really insecure people out there who are just jealous and spiteful enough to do that? But then again, they forget that people around may speculate and would be able to guess who are the 'likely suspects' who'd do immature things like that anyways *shrug*

I believe in always being the magnanimous one, be genuinely nice and polite until someone really proves they're a complete assh*le. Even if you find out who it is, since the authorities take identity fraud VERY seriously nowadays, you might want to give them a chance JC. My 2 cents anyways.

But if this happens again in future and you get the same evidence that it's their doing again, you can then proceed with legal action because it's evident it's not a prank of sorts but they're just out to smear your name in a completely dishonest manner.

Can't believe such petty people exist...

YUCKS!!!

If I'm not wrong the law should be able to fine the criminal for defamation and fraud identity, not really sure if he'll be jailed...check up with your lawyer! At the meantime take care...

Those people are not fit to be in the magic arena and going to the police is the best way out.

They think by doing they are smart. To me they are bast..ds.

Hi All,

Here is an update:

Through third party investigtions, we have discovered other incidents of identity fraud.

This post will include one such incident. The post under 'Comments' of a video was made using my name and website - I did not make this post. Incidentally, the comment was made on the same day as the comment on David Lai's webpage in the same tone and style. It does not take a genius to see that it is the same individual.

Click on the link below and/ or see the attached screen capture to the comment, apparently "made by me", and see if you find anything else interesting.

The good news is that we have been in contact with Metacafe to secure an IP address to match with other known IP addresses that we already have.

As I know the individual who has made these comments visits SMC, I'm giving him a chance to contact me personally to resolve this issue before it needs to be escalated any further. I will chalk it up to a mistake and honest unintention if the person approaches me with a sincere apology.

It is sad that productive time has to be wasted on such malicious and petty acts but hopefully this will deter others from trying the same thing.

Thanks for reading.

Best,

J C

Uh... it seems like this person is pretending to be not only JC Sum but also Kiki Tay? What is he up to?

Kiki Tay - June 25, 2007 08:29 AM (GMT)
Hi all!

This is all a misunderstanding, JC and I had been in contact and we have resolved this issue.

Cheers!

Hi All,

Yes, Kiki has contacted me personally and I'm satisfied to let the matter rest.

This issue of identity fraud is considered closed and I've been assured it will never happen again.

If anyone sees instances of it happening in other blogs, video sites or forums, please notify me immediately.

Thank you.

Mods, please lock this thread.

Best,

J C
