Title: Marriage Proposal
Description: Any ideas?
dry_gin - June 13, 2007 12:56 AM (GMT)
Hi Guys,
Before anyone of you think that I am the one that is proposing!
THINK AGAIN!!!!
I was chatting wif my friend last nite, mentioned to me that he is going to propose soon. Now, with that thought in mind, I was thinking to myself, wouldn't it be kinda cool if I could propose in a magical way?
Would appreciate any thoughts or ideas that you might think of, but than again, best if the effects are practical.
Cheers!

Eh, bro...
I honestly don't think you should do magic to your proposal leh... at the end of the day, all girls want to be married and the proposal is like THE most important thing EVER... so if you make it cheesy with magic, she's just so gonna roll her eyes... well, maybe... but that's a possibility you don't want, right? :P
Just do it the good, old fashion way with the surprise flowers (ROSES - pink and reds!), on bent knee with the engagement ring (no TAKA cheapo jewelery hor) at the perfect setting and moment ^_^
It might be weird coming from me, a performer who also owns a magic shop, but honestly... as a GIRL, I'd say stay away from using magic in your proposal... I know some people have discussed this before in other International magic forums, and I think:
1. Giving himber rings as an engagement ring is so totally uncool - hello, you know what THE ring is supposed to represent right, and the himber ring is... obviously gaffed!?!?! <_<
2. Flash paper can be stressful working with, talking about the misdirection and timing and the other bits you have to be mindful of. I reckon a proposal is already a nerve-wrecking event for the guy, so you really don't want to have elements in the proposal that made you even more 'kan-cheong' *LOL* So think twice if you want to do a rose/ ring in box production.
3. Obviously no mentalism effects. She's probably been your guinea pig for magic off and on, whenever you got a new toy to play with or learnt a new effect, so really... spare her before she thinks you're beyond redemption :g:
Do something romantic.
Fill up her entire bedroom with helium heart-shaped balloons; have a choir of little children surprise her with 'your' song when she's lured to that special location... engineer something sweet and dramatic because all girls are a sucker for that - no matter how tough they try to act. But seriously, you know your girl the best *grin* And the general standing is...
As long as you put effort into it, she'll definitely be touched.
Good luck!!!!

IMO, a diamond ring works like magic.
But I disagree that magic for proposal is chessy. Depends how you pull it off. I remember something my friend did:
1. Setting, a posh restaurant.
2. Show her an ordinary, cheap looking ring.
3. After some talking about no $$$ to buy a good ring, he "magically" changed the ring into a expensive diamond ring.
4. Gf screams and tears came flowing.
5. Happily married, now planning to have kids.
(Ok, I made up the screaming part)
*Now we know how to propose to Ning.... any takers?
yong_tianadeline - June 13, 2007 05:38 AM (GMT)
If you don't overdo it, it probably won't be cheesy.
Perhaps like appear a rose then lead her to a room filled with roses etc, etc. The rest should be the old-fashioned kind of way though.
But then, i personally think i won't like it too much if my boyfriend is a magician and he still does magic to propose... Unless he's a layman and he especially went to learn or something. If he's not, and he has always tried new effects on me before that, i'd probably say: Gosh.. Spare me...
And besides, she might think: It's PROPOSAL DAY for goodness sake, can't you just leave magic aside for a day??!!
:P

Anyway, I think, what ning meant is, dun do the obvious extreme.
Most gals that I know like it to be romantic and direct. Because as your girlfriend, most likely she have seen you doing many many things on her. And proposing to her, you still take your magic into consideration, it might tell her that you not romantic at all.
Do the obvious and simple stuffs to gals, it always works.

I did that before when I was creating special events *grin* I came out with this original and novel concept for my client last year, who wanted the most romantic proposal ever... Feel free to use my idea, I'm not charging ;)
The location was the beautiful and serene Kranji War Memorial (perfect weather and clean green grass!), where they first met at a school excursion many years ago. A choir of children dressed in white were already waiting for the girl. She had absolutely no idea of course, what was in stored for her!
He brought her to our waiting area and she was surprised of course, because they all seemed to be waiting for her. They then started singing Dusty Springfield's "Close to You" and just when they ended the song, he proposed on bent knee with flowers and all.
The youngest kid, a girl standing in the front in a white dress, came up to her and asked "Jie jie, will you marry kor kor?" And he popped open the box to show the engagement ring.
She said YES of course *grin* So it was all good. A very, very touching moment & I'm glad everything went smoothly as planned!
If you intend to do something DRAMATIC too, let me know. I've got a contact for a helicopter ride for 2 so if you really want to do some mega special (but will also be mega expensive), feel free to ask me... I'd love to help ;)

You guys watch too many movies lah...
I feel a marriage proposal should be sincere, and true to yourself.
Magic, no matter how you try to dress it, is deception. IMHO, it shouldn't mix.
btw,
Didn't you watch "the Prestige"...??
Wife : NO more secrets!!!
Borden : Secrets are MY LIFE!!!

Cheers!

Yeah it is... it was a priceless moment and she's one very lucky girl ^_^ Not everyone has such sweet boyfriends.
Alternatively, you can prepare a well planned picnic basket for a midnight picnic of sorts. Here's another tested and proven idea, another original concept I came up with for Indigo Sky Events as well (my special events company, now defunct):
- Ask her out for 'supper' and say you'll pick her up
- Surprise her in a limo cab with a driver so you 2 sit at the back
- Head to a nice strip on the beach (e.g. Palawan Beach on a weekday)
- Set up the picnic things while she's already giddy with thanks
- Make sure you have everything properly planned out; food + drinks + sheets + proper cutlery & utensils, nothing cheapo - go all out to impress!
- Pour out the bubbly for 2 in champagne flutes
- Let her drink and enjoy the spread you've prepared (no greasy food!)
- Offer to refill her glass when she's almost done with her bubbly
- That's when you discreetly drop the engagement ring inside her glass
- Obviously you've prepared it in your palm before hand
- Misdirect before with conversation. Everything looks beautiful at night anyways
- Pass her the glass to hold as you pick up the champagne bottle
- Act surprised like there's something in the glass
- Fish it out for her, smile and propose with the engagement ring
IF SHE DOESN'T MELT, SHE'S NOT HUMAN!!!!!!!!!!!
Now, I'm sure you guys don't need me to go on with ideas. Be original and creative, and most importantly, make her feel special. Nothing's worse than a self-absorbed loser who doesn't know how to treat a girl.
Do what you think she'll like, not what you're (comfortably) capable of. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing anyways *grin*

Beware! Whichever guy that proposes to Ning... please take note...she obviously has alot of great ideas for proposals. Also means her expectations must be very very very high. Hahaha!
Anyway, I think if I were to use magic in a marriage proposal, I'll keep it very very quick and simple. I got this idea watching a demo of Fire Flight. Craft a ring using flashpaper and then burn it into a ring. Simple and as long as you don't give a hint to what's going to happen, it'll be a pleasant surprise. Of course though, add this on somewhere to what Ning has already given.
On a side note, the idea of using a choir to propose is very romantic. Last year, my ex-school choir alumni performed at Fullerton Hotel during Christmas and did a marriage proposal for a couple as a request. The choir sang "Can't Help Falling In Love With You" and the girl had no idea the song was meant to be for her. She thought they were just there to listen to the choir. It was so absolutely sweet and romantic and there was a crowd too to witness it. I bet it must have been so memorable for the girl.

Ning's Mr Right better blow her away with a duper-extra-unique proposal.
Ning: You got so many ideas!! I know who to look for help when its my turn to present the ring. ^_^

LOL... I'm still looking for my elusive Mr. Right :P
Perhaps Jon's right... maybe my expectations are too high  I'm gonna grow old and alone, with cats for company while everyone else around me gets married and I help them get their perfect wedding/ proposal!
Just last week one of my closest friends got engaged  So it was such a strange feeling of deja vu when I saw Gordon's post this morning! LOL!
Anyways, if you need help, you know I'm always here to lend a hand... or at least, give you a clearer insight on what works for girls! ;)

That sounds like Spiderman 3 for me.
Both seriously good ideas man. LOL!! But I always like different things. These things, too common for me. LOL!!

Living only with cats is a bad idea. If you've ever watched CSI, you would know what I mean.
Back to topic...
For me, I guess I would take her to a place with a live band. At a certain moment, I will go up the stage and sing her Leslie Cheung's "Zui" (literally means chasing after) or Jacky Cheung's "Ni De Ming Zi Wo De Xing Shi" (Your name with my surname).

Going up on stage to sing isn't easy... our Axl is one plucky guy!!! ;) Larry, I don't quite understand what you said...

i had an idea to change a 50cent coin into a ring like a colour change
shoot ogawa and apollo robbins has a routine with a end like that called the Nabil change

Bake 5 bread rolls with the ring in one of them. And do magician's choice? Or not. Just and her the bread with the ring in it (previously marked) and let her bite it. But if she swallows it, that would be quite funny. I cant imagine if she'll still wear it when it comes out. HAHA..

After reading this post I'm going to disturb you for my engagement idea Ning.
I'm so thankful for reading this post!
I was almost convinced that I should put magic into that special moment,
but I realized that girls just want that memory to be far more special :)
Thanks Ning for highlighting this!
And, rest assured... when my time's coming in 1 or 2 more years,
I'll disturb you in your studio.
