Title: Volunteer Close Up Magicians Needed
Description: Silver Ribbon Project
blindcat - June 15, 2007 07:58 AM (GMT)
I'm looking for about 6 close up magicians to perform for a Silver Ribbon Project Carnival on 29th July at Youth Park. This carnival is to help to reduce stigmatisation of mental illnesses & psychological health problems. Reply here or pm/email me for more details.
This project is done in collaboration with JCUS (James Cook Uni Singapore) and there'll be talks by consumers (ex-patients) that have recovered or in stable condition, information panels and also a room where there'll be a simulation of what it feels like to suffer from some of the psychological health problems. E.g. Schizophrenia, Depression, Eating Disorders, etc. Volunteers (psychology students from JCUS) will also be available to share more information about the various psychological health problems. It's not all sobering and boring, there'll be fun and games, with bands performing, game booths, magicians (that's where you'll play a part) to engage the crowd. As we wanna impart the message that yes mental illnesses may sound like a serious matter, but it need not be all doom and gloom.
We're also in talks with several sponsors for free ice cream and prizes. Maybe if you've got contacts to share with regards to this cause, we'll really appreciate it!

Blindcat is my friend who is part of the organising students from JCUS for this event. I would volunteer for this but I might not be available on the day.
Mental health patients are usually unfairly stigmatised in our society because of our asian stigmas and often do not receive enough attention and understanding from society at large, as compared to the other more high profile "ribbons".
I think everyone "knows someone who knows someone" who was depressed but did not know to seek medical help and eventually hurt themselves, because they thought it's for "crazy people".
Events like this help people accept and understand psychological health in general and inform them of the options available and reduces the stigma that prevents most people from seeking the help they need. Considering that almost EVERYBODY is depressed during some point in their lives, this is important.
This is a good cause, not to mention a good opportunity to do some close up in Orchard ;)
Do contact her if you are available for this event. Just click on the email button.
Or you can follow up post here with your questions and she'd take them.

hey.
I've checked my timetable, Im free for now but being in army makes one's schedule a bit volatile. So I hope you understand. I was wondering about the size of the crowd because the stuff that i do for about 15 people comfortably iddnt work so well on a larger crowd which i did at the arts street. I was also wondering about stuff like timing, movement and the way the whole event is organised so that we can see how best we can help. Furthermore it might take some time to make sure there isnt an overlap between what i do and whatthe other magicians do.

It's a walk around situation so crowd size is gonna depend on how good you are ;)
But you will not be expected to be able to be seen and heard by like 50 people at one go. If you really do attract a crowd that's too big for you to handle, maybe someone else can help you thin out the crowd a bit by drawing some from your crowd.
The event is carnival-styled so you are pretty much to roam WITHIN the perimeters of the carnival.
Once we have a confirmed number of volunteers, I will get the organisers to work out a schedule for the day.

Hi Everyone,
I know this is a week's late but still late than never. Hope you guys enjoy the photos. Link is below ^_^
On 29th July a Group of Brave Young Men stormed the rough weather and displayed their unearthly skills for everyone at the Silver Ribbon Project. The Silver Ribbon project was initiated to stamp out the stigma of mental patients so that they too have a place in our hearts and a position in our hurried lives.
This event is very different from the recent CCF that was held at Novena Square as this time we had to endure the heat and humidity of nature. The event started on a rainy note and it caused the floor to be wey and muddy. This was'nt the best situation to be in but we all managed to make the best out of it. Fortunately, mother nature was nice to us and the weather turned for the better.
This event brought together a number of new faces. Delvin, Csjoshi and Alexander. It was nice meeting all of you for the first time. You guys did a great job :) Cards, Coins, Rings, Rubber Bands, Sponge Balls and even Mouse Trap, you name it, we performed it. Nonetheless, the most popular effect of the day had to be Aloy's Pet Effect. Check out the photos at our SMC Website and see the reactions. It was so good, clean and simple. It slayed everyone whom he performed too. It was so good our ZiAn had to use it as well and he too got a good break out of it. Its such a simple effect but packs a big punch. Those you who were there, you'll know. Too bad we did'nt win our prize, although ZiAn was the closest but he was such a gentleman...
All in all, great jobs guys, I'm sure we have all done SMC proud and entertained everyone whom we approached. I like to take this opportunity to give a shout out to everyone, JCU students and staff who were there. Shade and his boys, Delvin, Sufi and Syafiq. Gordon, ZiAn, Gallen, Alexander, Csjoshi and our Mr SMC, Aloy. You guys and your big heart has made this event successful. Thank You... :)
