Little Black Book Test by Docc Hilford

Book tests are as popular with mentalists as cut and restored rope tricks are with magicians. Finally, here is one that stands out from the rest.

Effect

The mentalist shows a little black book filled with nearly 100 different names and addresses of women. The mentalist gives it to a woman in the audience. She opens the book to any page and chooses one of the names on the pages. She shows it to a man and he also chooses a name from the open book.

The mentalist hands a sealed envelope to the woman to be explained later.

The mentalist starts with a single letter. He identifies a random letter and moves swiftly. Without fumbling or pumping, He correctly identifies the addresses, names, and phone numbers chosen by both parties! He even gives the zodiac signs.

Finally, The mentalist explains that he met with the same girl as chosen by the woman! In the envelope are three souvenirs from the previous night out, a cocktail napkin with lipstick print, a swizzle stick from a swanky night club and a matchbook cover. On the cover is written the same number as was selected by the woman!

A BONUS EFFECT

Later in the show, if the mentalist desires, he can know the zodiac sign of the woman who helped him. A simple, yet clever ploy allows for this information to be given without anyone knowing, all while the first effect is taking place.

The method based on two old principles, the first letter cue and specialty identifiers combined with a breakthrough system know as the grid means you can know everything without touching the book. It can be examined by anyone and there's never a force.

Little Black Book Test by Docc Hilford

Although this is basically a book test, it is a book test with a big difference. Firstly you are not dealing with a book but with an address book of contact details of your woman friends – a little black book! This opens up to an interesting and romantic presentation. However, it requires that you have a good head for mnemonics and mental calculations. If this interests you, read on:

Mentalist hands his “little black book” to a lady spectator. She chooses a contact from the nearly 100 different lady names listed in the book. A male spectator similarly chooses one other contact. Mentalist hands over a sealed envelope to be opened later.

Mentalist is able to divine the names of both chosen contacts in the book, as well as their contact details such as their emails, addresses and telephone numbers.

When the envelope is opened, it contains 3 souvenirs the mentalist had from a previous night out with a lady friend. They are a swizzle stick, a cocktail napkin with a lipstick print, and a matchbook which has the same telephone number as the contact chosen by the lady spectator written on the cover! The mentalist has dated the same lady as chosen by the lady spectator from his address book!

The effect comes with an instruction booklet that teaches you the method, and a blank pocket address book. The address book is for you to fill in the woman’s contact details in your own handwriting. Once you know the method, you can and should create your own woman’s contact names and addresses. This is what makes the trick so effective – you customize it to your own local settings. As a bonus, you can use this trick as a pre-work to find out your spectator’s zodiac sign without arousing anyone’s attention.

This effect plays really big, especially with the envelope ending, yet it is small enough to fit inside your pocket. However, as mentioned earlier, you need mnemonics skill and able to do some mental calculations as well, but nothing really beyond anyone’s reach. If this is you, the effect comes with the highest recommendation.

Rating: 5 of 5 Stars!

Personal Message:
I really like the novel idea of a 'black book', it's a refreshing take on the other book tests that use regular magazines/ novels/ etc. which can get a bit 'stale'. This is cheeky, and the great thing is, like John mentions... it can be customised and localised in our Singaporean context. If you're a performer looking for a good mentalism effect, this is something to consider because it's very clever & packs a solid punch! :)

So are the names and foreign phone numbers are printed on the book? Or is it customisable to local names and phone numbers?

Ning - June 16, 2007 04:27 AM (GMT)
Hey Joel :)

As mentioned in the review, it's totally customizable a 100% so you could have really localized names like Ng Li Ling or Hong Xiao Hui, Chow Ah Lian even :P This obviously applies to all the addresses and contacts as well!

The beauty of Little Black Book Test is (besides being examinable), that it comes with Docc Hilford's well written manuscript and a perfect sized address book that you use. It's empty (as John mentioned, it comes blank) and you write in it so it's really personalised!

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
ning

This sounds alittle bit like Pambudi's magician's Dream. But more advance and technical I suppose.

I think its different.

I heard of Docc hilford, the little black book before. Never thought it will come out to the market. I believe in his product also.

*Taken Out, forget to look through*

Can tell it's different. But Pambudi's effect is equally as strong. You can make it more inspectable by making some ammendments to the suggested principles.

These effects, however, sound VERY similar.
