After reading Aloy's post again, I got confused. If the act needs to be for closeup or parlour, then i guess it's safer to do closeup stuffs. Cos from my understanding, for a parlour act, you can do a wider variety of stuffs as you can get away with some angle sensitive issues and stuffs. Hope to hear some clarifications regarding this matter.

One last thing, I feel it to be a little weird that finalists have to pay extra fees. Haha. Kind of anti climax. Like, "Yeay! I am in the finals, and I gotta pay 10bucks!"
In any case, it's a small issue, just voicing out my personal opinion.

Yes it is open to the public. Yes, you are more than welcome to spread the word to your friends and fellow magicians who are not from SMC and encourage them to participate.

Actually there's only 1 single category, and your competition act can be either close-up or parlour or anything in-between. Thus, each participant is only limited to 1 entry.
As for finalists having to pay an additional $10 upon qualifying for the finals, you may want to think of it as a fee waiver for taking a shot at the auditions, i.e. you only pay the full price of registration ($20) upon qualifying for the finals and knowing you have a real good chance at the prizes. :D
Don't forget that finalists also get 2 complimentary Premium tickets to the finals, so it's really a win-win situation. Throw in the attractive prizes in the finals (details will be revealed in due time) and it's really hard to see why anyone who is fairly competent in magic WOULDN'T want to participate. B)

AhLiShuFi, regarding the registration fee for finals, we decided to make as affordable as possible. Hence, we decided on additional fees only when one advances to the finals. As Adrian has mentioned, considering the 2 complimentary tickets and the weightage of the prizes. I assure you that its money well spent... ^_^
