Title: Kid's Shows Routines
Description: What would you do not do?
Aloy - September 15, 2004 03:45 AM (GMT)
What tricks would you do for children's magic shows?
What would you use as an "opener" and as a finale?
what would you NOT do for children's shows?
Here's mine:
[Opener]
Miser's Dream (this is jamkid's suggestion to me once for a show i did and it worked great :) )
or Chinese Linking Rings/Ninja Rings
Cut and restore rope
Professor's Nightmare (equal unequal rope)
ring thru rope (rope thru ring)
cup and balls
Crazy man's handcuff (i like to get closeup somewhere during the performance)
A little card effect I created, where spec finds another spec's card (i put a little fairy tale about a prince and a princess and such such)
Bullet catching card (Kids love it!)
any simple/straightforward mind reading
[Finale]
Levitating objects B)
I avoid:
Spoon bending (somehow it just doesn't stick with children very well? You get much better reactions from the adults)
Sucker tricks (children are often more emotionally sensitive than adults. I dun see the point of taking a child, putting him on stage, and make him feel awkard)
Complicated card tricks (even something relatively straightforward like 2 card monte is too complicate. Children loses attention quite fast)
Anybody else wanna share their thoughts?
Cheers

Should have add the magic colouring book lol. Chlidren love that. And I gave my to the birthday boy as a gift lol. Now regreted it lol. But as long as the kids are happy lol.
Ning - September 28, 2004 01:52 AM (GMT)
yeah, was thinking of bringing along my magic coloring book but mine's a big and bulky version, not something penguin magic has (the pocket sized one).
i'll be doing a series of "magic beads" production with the kids... pull out magic beads from their ears, nose, belly buttons... they get to keep it to. LOL... :P

Check this out from Murphy's... the pictures look kinda cute!
Flip Over Rabbit Wringer by Jay Leslie
Jay Leslie hits us again with another wonderful item from the House of Enchantment!
Effect: The magician introduces his rabbit. A brightly colored ribbon is loosely tied around the rabbit's neck. The magician then gently places the rabbit inside the Rabbit Wringer and cranks the handle. A flat rabbit rolls out the front of the box. In this manner, the rabbit can be taken with you wherever you go! The flat rabbit is set aside and the box flipped open. The ribbon, minus the rabbit, is flicked out of the box into the audience. The rabbit is completely gone! The rabbit may be reproduced in one of three ways, which Jay goes over in the provided, detailed instructions!
Jay Leslie has made a few changes in the design since this effect was first introduced years ago. Combining two effects into one, he has added springs to the rollers and flocked the rollers and the inside of the prop. The prop itself is gorgeous and extremely well-made as only the House of Enchantment can do it! Thank you, Jay!

....I think this would look pretty good too, especially on stage where people like to see doves/ animals appear/ reappear.

do u guys think card flourishes will impress the kids?
ren8585 - October 7, 2004 08:19 AM (GMT)
dont think so... i saw huron doing 360 spider to a kid and he just stare blankly waiting for something to happen lol... kids prefer magic to flourishes
BuaYa - October 11, 2004 02:18 PM (GMT)
How about D'Lites. I like the way they point and point and point...
JasonL - November 8, 2004 05:44 AM (GMT)
Wow morphine so many routines in one show. How long is your show?
Card fluorishes and card manipulations generally do not impress kids. Personally I feel that fluorishes should be used to enhance an effect. THe quickness of the hand and the impressive looking moves should be done in between effects or during a lull period in an effect. For eg, when one spec is shuffling the cards or you are waiting someone to pass you something. It should not be done as a presentation piece by itself.

The Peanut Butter and Jelly Illusion
The Effect
You display a large jar of peanut butter on one side of the stage and place a jar of jelly on the other side.
You place a black cover over each jar. After a few magic words you tell your spectators that the peanut butter and jelly have changed places.
The kids are naturally a bit skeptical... You really get them going by offering to repeat the miracle and return the jars to their original locations before you lift the covers!
The kids are ready to start a riot! They're unconvinced to say the least.
Until you lift off the covers and show that the change really did happen!
You show both sides of two pieces of bread and place them fairly and cleanly in a brown paper bag. A spectator holds the bag the entire time you're performing The Peanut Butter and Jelly Illusion, and at the end of the routine they open the bag to find the two pieces of bread have magically transformed into a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich!
oh yummy yummy... :P

morphine said shud avoid sucker tricks cos there is no point having a kid up to stage and embarassing him.
i just want to point out that sucker tricks involving the entire kid audience might work out well. for example, hippity hop rabbits will get them into a riot and stir up the entire atmostphere into a very exited one. the final kicker effect is usually so strong, the entire audience go silent for quite a while. unlike other effects where they just see something happen, such effects, because it misleads the audience into thinking something else has happened, is very strong. i think if presented correctly and well, it shud not seem like u are telling everyone in the audience "haha, suckers...", but rather in a humorous way like ur pulling their leg. im sure parents would also be amused at the way how all the kids want to be involved and one of my strongest impression of children shows that i can remember is always how all the kids are shouting and stuff. so, i think one or two sucker effects might spice up ur show. dun get me wrong, im not saying that sucker effects are always very good, but just that in a small amounts, and with good presentations, it can be good.

Hi Guys,
If you love kid's magic, you should have Birthday Magic Dough DVD.
I have been performing kid's magic for quite a while. probably more than 10 years.
When I started off, it is quite hard to capture their attention. To do good kid's magic, you must be able to control them first. You have to try as many kid's props till you find the suitable props for yourself. Believe me, not all props suit your personality. It is also depend on how you dress.
You may need to invest a portable PA system with CD input to make your show more ineteresting.

its the best to fress up as a clown

Hi Dong,
If you love kids magic, not only the colours, the sound also attract their attention.
I have a PA system, portable one with CD players built in. I bought it for S$250.00.
And the speaker is about 40 watts. Excellent.

For a ten minutes show with 0 budget, I guess u can perform rope tricks such as cut & restore rope tricks, professor nightmare & escape tricks with ropes.Just my 2 cents...Another great tricks is just having fun with the kids using egg bag.
GordonLi - March 16, 2005 12:26 PM (GMT)
dont feel pressured to perform, if u dun want to dont! its probably better that way anyway...
if u have no budget for magic, go do some other stuff.

??????
Clowning is much more difficult than you can ever imagine and unless you have cloaked enough flight time in front of an audience, you shouldn't consider it as an easy way out.
There's a reason why there aren't many worthwhile clowns around.
Then again, what do I know.
