We have been talking abt a competition for the longest time, but who will judge?

I think it would be better if i actually start this thread here instead of going alittle off topic.

This Magician idol thingy can be done on the outing, but for further discussion. Kindly do it here. Thank you :)

I got an idea Donnoe whether u guys will like it. SOme one said having a layman rite? Ya we can rope in a few ppl there which are eating and drinking to be the judge, someone which NV seen our magic b4. B)

But they might not like magic afterall and what if some of our contestant fumble, the techniques and secrets of that effect might be leaked to unknown people.

This 1 we leave it to Morphine and the other mod to really discuss who they wanna choose.

Hmm for this contest ley Morphine do the setting lol.. There should be at least one magician to be the judge hahaha I Vote for Jeremey Pei lol and Cynwell lol :P

Kevin - December 19, 2004 03:43 PM (GMT)
And we can have our own simon cowell:

"I thought that ambitious card routine was absolutely dreadful. How DARE you even call yourself a magician? Get out of this room, you vile, rude pigs!"

Okay, okay, maybe we can have simon AND elton john too :D

How about let Singapore vote? Then we can get some cash by having them burning up the hotline, voting for the most popular dude there... me!

Hehe, just kidding... I wanna be the judge ;)

kryptikalism - December 19, 2004 05:48 PM (GMT)
how about not calling it magician idol?

sounds goofy, methinks.

ReDeFiNe - December 20, 2004 04:14 AM (GMT)
haha...in fact just after SI alot of other magicians actually told me to do something like a magician idol in our club...

I think its a good idea but how to judge? hahaz...

Magic competitions can be a really good thing..good for local magicians to work on solid materials as well as to gain some credentials...

but of course ... have to be legit la....i have been in many many competitions whereby the winners are set.!...

Hmm...if u guys serious bout it..haha..may consider really having a solid competition show selling tickets and booking a theater....

juz a suggestion,...:)

I think Magicdow, Oritentalist, ReDefine & Cynwell would be nice judges ^_^ This sounds REALLY interesting!!!

Laymen audience!!

Why the funk would a REAL magician perform for a bunch of magicians? COME ON.

Winners are decided by having the most number of people pass out / soil their undergarments

erm... if we use people eating or Drinking at the shops.... even if they enjoyeD the magic.....everything shocks them .... so it will be very DIffcult to juDge .... they might just abyhow pick one....
^_^

I think lay man would be a better judge...
experienced magicians tends to judge them by their slieghts, skills, but, what they might have missed out is the "entertainment" value of the performance...

like i feel, magic is not only about performing fantastic moves, it's about capturing audience attention and managing the audience...and i believe, if one performs infront of an experienced magis, he/she will not do as well as when he/she performs to layman...
that's my views :)

ReDeFiNe - December 21, 2004 08:42 AM (GMT)
hmm...you may be right about having a laymen as a judge ...however...there are certain aspect that a laymen won't be able to judge..specifically ORIGINALITY , this is one important thing in competitions...many performers can perform fantastic magic..but its just the image of another magician in a video... An act in top competitions such as IBM or SAM ..will not be allowed to compete if the act is a copied act of another performer... Maybe the idea of competition is different in you guys preception..but my opinion of a competition is for the competitor to come up with something new and original...

then, we've have just a magi to stand in as an "inspector", he/she cant determine how the marks are given by the layman directly, but if he/she spotted some "duplicate", he/she can minus the mark accordingly.

:)

Ning - December 22, 2004 01:44 AM (GMT)
Let's have the right mix of magicians & laymen as judges accordingly ^_^ Best of 2 worlds...

BuaYa - December 22, 2004 03:18 AM (GMT)
Layman audience thinks:

"I think this girl is cute, give her 100 lah."
"Woah this guy has so much facial hair, it could substitute all my head hair, 30 lah."

I doubt you all want that to happen.

GordonLi - December 23, 2004 07:27 AM (GMT)
i vote for Magicdow and ReDefine to be judges. i think we shud do away with layman judge, its troublesome for us and for them. originality is a major part of a competition (i say the most impt), and layman wud have problems.

Ning - December 23, 2004 08:42 AM (GMT)
Don't you guys worry ;) All we can promise you is that it'd be a good balance in the judging criteria - more info to be up nearer the date.

Meanwhile, please check the SMC Magic Competition topic on the mainboard for the constant updates. Thank you! ^_^
