Hi Ning,

How big is the stage? Will there be angle problem for stage act?

Will there be seats at the 2 sides of the stage.

Hi Ning,

How big is the stage? Will there be angle problem for stage act?

Will there be seats at the 2 sides of the stage.

The stage is ABOUT 3 metres by 1.5 metres, it's more of a raised plateform place with stage lightings.
The audiences is seated directed in front about 60 degrees both ways, but the main entrance is on the right hand side of the stage so there will be people there too.
The nearest audiences will be too close for a stage act, and also the category in for the competition is close-up/parlour.

Feel free to ask questions guys!

The Orientalist - December 24, 2004 12:00 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the information.

Probably too close for stage act.

Ning - December 24, 2004 01:45 AM (GMT)
Hi Andy!

Yeah, this round it's gonna be a Close Up/ Parlour act... we'll try to incorporate Stage next time around ok? ^_^ Why not consider doing a parlour act really? ;)

Aloy - December 24, 2004 03:20 AM (GMT)
Here's more details for competitors:

The panel of judges will consist of a mystery panel of magcians, which we will only announce on the day to make sure everything is fair ;), and 1 layman.

After each performance, each judge will give a short commentary on the performances and at the end of all the performances, the judges will decide thru their scoring, the top 4 finalists.
Each judge will also have 10 votes each which they are free to spread out the votes among the top 4 finalist.
The voting is then open to the floor and all the guests will have 1 vote each and it will be the audience who decides the final standings.

So contestants, it is equally important to please the judges as well as the audiences and it is as important to please magicians as well as layman. B)

Good luck!

Ning - December 24, 2004 03:26 AM (GMT)
..........Afterall, a good magician not only gets the respect of his/ her fellow peers, his/ her job is to ultimately entertain and impress their audience (laypeople) too! Don't forget that important bit ;)

Most importantly, don't stress yourselves for nothin', it's important to have fun too!

Aloy - December 24, 2004 04:57 AM (GMT)
We've got our 1st Contestant.....

Here comes a new challenger.......

Kevin - December 24, 2004 03:15 PM (GMT)
Come on, guys.... join up, just for the hell of it. It's called a "competition" for a REASON, you know...

Now, back to my room on the 3rd floor where I shall plan out what to do when I get back in SG.

THANK YOU KEN WEBER!!!

yet another call to all magicians:

JOIN UP JOIN UP JOIN UP!!!

it doesn't matter if you're good or not, it's for the experience...

the more competitors, the longer the show will be right?

this is your chance to actually participate in a magic competition..

even if you don't get first place, or second or third, you'll still know how it feels like to be under pressure. it's an experience that shouldn't be missed!

so JOIN UP JOIN UP JOIN UP!!

iamthewalrus - December 25, 2004 03:41 AM (GMT)
Hey all!

Huron, the only reason why it's so tempting is that it's the only way to go!

Sign up! Make our society proud! You'll be collecting important experiences you can NEVER get on the streets! And the competition'll be good for everyone!

Oh, and by the way... how will the acoustics be? DO we have to use vocal projections, or will there me a microphone and shit? Just wanna know first, so I'll be able to train properly. Burr.

I am arranging for a PA system for the event but mics might prove to be too unfriendly for the performers. How many effects can you do with only 1 hand free? :)

The place is not very huge so do work on your vocal projection and not count on mics :)

We can arrange for music to be played during your performance if anyone needs it. But you must prepare all the music on CDs ready for immediate playing.

Feel free to ask questions! :)

Cheers

Aloy - December 25, 2004 11:34 AM (GMT)
I'll like to remind everyone taking part in the competition to email their entry registration according to Ning's format stated in the 1st post.

I will be putting up the prizes very soon as soon as we firmed it up, look out for it B)

Kevin - December 25, 2004 03:43 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the info, Morph. I was actually thinking of those hands-free clip-on mics, but I guess that I'll have to go for the vocal projection techniques again. Aight.

Obviously, you haven't seen This Guy.

-Kev

Huron - December 25, 2004 05:21 PM (GMT)
Haha I like the clip microphones the best when I perform. Once I did a gig at bougainvilla park and the big mic around my neck fell and spoilt. Embarrassing. Haha... I'll probably take part. Fun fun fun... we're facing off each other.
MUAHAHAHAHAHA

Aloy - December 26, 2004 04:24 AM (GMT)
Great! Go on and send the email Ning specified in the 1st post of this thread.
I will still be working on getting the hands free mic but just don't count on it.

Another thing, I think some of us got the impression that competition routine has to be original matertial.
Not True.
It will help you get more points in the creativity department but it is not a requirement. Actually presenting an existing effect with new presentation/patter is also being creative. You can use existing routines but do think about making your own changes.

And the competition is open to ALL. Mod, regular, newbie, all.
Only people who CANNOT take part is our panel of judges, our 2 emcees, Ning and iamwalrus, for the night, and myself B)

There you go gentlemen. Here's your chance to walk the talk. No more "talking about soldiers on the paper".
And you dun have to win the competition to earn brag rights, just taking part shows you are not all patter and no effect. B)
And we are always talking about improving our magic constantly, and what better way than a competition experience? :)

Here's a little reveal, the 1st prize is a $100 magic product voucher. :)
There will be other prizes for various others also, will post it up as soon as I can firm it.

Kevin - December 26, 2004 10:24 AM (GMT)
$100 magic voucher? Hm... is that all? hehe... Don't mind me, I'm just a little on the edge about getting some extra bling bling ker-ching. And what can the voucher be used for? Burr.

-Kev

SeNgHoE - December 26, 2004 10:49 AM (GMT)
lol

Kev is money faced.... He must wear a mask -- >> :ph43r: :P

Kevin - December 26, 2004 10:55 AM (GMT)
Yes, I am money-faced. And money-armed, money-thighed, and money-kidneyed. HAPPY?!?!

Speaking of which, are YOU joining up, Seng? :P\

-Kev

Well, you can sell it if you wanna B)

Or you can use it to buy $100 worth of magic products of your choice from Cynwell :)
Considering that we are a privately run forum with no commercial affliation (and no govt funding (?!)), that was a strangling prize that we put up :ph43r:

...plus venue, plus logistics, plus drinks, plus plus plus.... :ph43r:   :ph43r:

Ning - December 27, 2004 04:21 AM (GMT)
Hey fellas...

We on the organising committee can only do our best to plan that everything goes smoothly for this event but remember, its success ultimately rest on you guys...

You wanted a competition, so we're giving it to you ;) So now's the time to show some action and make Jan 7 '05 truly a night to remember!

Remember to tell your friends about it if you haven't already. Keep your registrations coming in! ^_^

GordonLi - December 27, 2004 03:36 PM (GMT)

They have mics, but no hands free ones. The best alternative they can provide is mic stands, which is still not very ideal.
I would say try voice projection methods. Unless you really really have to, don't use the mics, coz it might affect your performance.

Cheers

Yup, but we later decided to make it a cash voucher instead so winners can further their erm, magic education & buy the latest effects they want :P

So guys, you still have quite a bit to think about your routine (c'mon- 5 mins!) and all... good luck! ^_^

Ning - December 28, 2004 08:19 AM (GMT)
Just in - we've just confirmed the allocation of prizes B)

Pls refer to the first post in this thread. Feel free to post any enquiries thank you!

GordonLi - December 28, 2004 01:48 PM (GMT)
im just afraid that there'll be too many ppl for a truely closeup performance. the excitement and atmosphere will not be felt at the back... oh well, lets have the guests in front shall we?

For close up work, the performer can invite a member of the audience up as a close up spec and volunteer. And the performer can play off the reaction of the volunteer.
That's the best we can do for a closeup competition.... B)

Kevin - December 29, 2004 03:30 AM (GMT)
Come on, Gordo... haven't you seen those magicians work the crowd in those L&L parlour videos? Regal freaked out a PACKED audience with his haunted bill effect... but then again, he IS the man.

5 minute routine?! Shit, I have one that's about 10 minutes. Damn :(

Dearie, 5 mins is the minimum... 10 mins is great!!! I'm sure lotsa folks are looking forward to seeing you do your thing already! B)

We just decided it has to be AT LEAST 5mins long cos we don't want any silly billys out there doing a sole balloon eating routine or something really lame in this competition :P If you intend to do a comedy act, do plan something solid ^_^

What we want is quality more than quantity (i.e. the length of the routine) but hey, give us both, you'll probably win hands down ;)

All the best to ALL performers... don't forget to submit your registration email if you haven't done so already! :)

Kevin - December 29, 2004 03:50 AM (GMT)
You're lucky I didn't plan on doing "The Card That Cannot Be Found" by Regal... that thing takes a freakin 45 minutes to perform. Guaranteed to slay, though :D

Best luck to all those against me! Not my intention for that to happen, though... hehe ;)

Meanwhile, everyone coming (performers included) please update us in the other list of invitees... we need to know an estimated number of guests coming for the night.

Thank you for your co-operation! ^_^

Can anyone say... OMEN?!?!?!?

Anyhow, yeah... come on people, what's a performer without an audience? And what's a competition without competitors?

The more the merrier. Just don't get drunk and be TOO merry.

in those vids the audience is like around 30, around the performer. the "close-up" atmostphere is still there cos of the way the audience is aranged, in 3 different levels so more easily packed, and theres still that intimate magic feeling. but if too many turn up, and cannot be at a table infront of the performer, but rather the performer is say 3 m from the nearest spectator, the essence of a close-up performance will be lost. im sure u understand then that performing closeup tricks at a closeup level is much different than at a parlour level. I wud still consider the L&L vids audiences to be nearer the closeup genre then parlour.
