Title: Human Blockhead
Description: Can you die from it?

Sinch - October 4, 2007 02:25 PM (GMT)
Hey guys! I learnt the effect where you hammer a nail into your nose recently and I'm sort of wondering if anyone has ever died from it, and wheter or not death is likely when first practising it. I don't really mind the fact that it is REALLY uncomfortable, the effect is well worth it. It's not worth death however. So...Can this kill you or permanantly maim you and is this likely? If not, it's a great impromptu effect.

'Show me a trick!'
'Hand me that brick and pencil over there'
'...eww...'

Please, for the love of God, I beg you....

Don't attempt something like that just to impress your friends.

-_-

I'll keep that in mind. It's still pretty intresting stuff though haha.

I have seen Will (yup, Iron Will) perform this. And yes, it was totally gross and  and :o . But I won't recommend you to try it unless you are very sure and know what you're doing. The nasal cavity may be pretty big but its still not that hard to miss...

You will not die because of that, but if you injure your nose, you might have to live with a tube that cut into your throat inorder to live, to allow breathing. :)

But please don't try that. I seriously think its very deadly.

mattlee - October 5, 2007 02:19 AM (GMT)

Please don't do this. My FYP(Final Year Project) in NTU was for computer assisted endoscopic sinus surgery.

I have seen the inside of the nose in all its glory, and I can tell you that although the nasal cavity is pretty big, the bones inside are all eggshell thin. And fragile. Especially the one at the base of the skull, which is definitely reachable by a nail. Your brain rests on this bone. Puncture at your own risk.

Even doctors don't dare to anyhow poke around inside, hence the need for special imaging equipment.

That is horrifying :o . Permanant damage. Haha alright. WON'T TRY IT GUYS! Thank you for the response  . I gave it a shot last night, got about half way in and decided...OMFG THIS IS SCARY! It felt pretty out of whack.

bigbadwolf - October 5, 2007 06:09 AM (GMT)
Plain stupid.

It's not as crazy as most people might think =x. It's theoratically possible but to actually do it is really :o .

csjoshi - October 5, 2007 10:41 AM (GMT)
hey.

If you really wanna do it though, look for someone experienced and maybe get some help from him. Perhaps there's a trick to it?

Yeah. I have it =s. I am thinking bout getting someone to watch over me while i do it. IF i do it =P! But the problem with the secret is that it's pretty dangerous. So yeah that's why I'm wodnering if there has been any like serious damage. Which there has been so I need to rethink it =D!

Do you know what they did in ancient Egypt? When they were going to mummify someone, they removed his/her brain through the nose...

It is NOT plain stupid

So do you mean people who do fire eating, glass walking, juggling fire touches, poi spinning and even rock climbing, is stupid?

These are stunts that have the ability to amuse audiences, of course, with the elements of danger in it.

Make sure you have a professional guiding you through any of these dangerous stunts, it may not go as smoothly as you think. So you will have to be responsible for your own loss.

Very nicely summerized! There is an element of danger in performing this trick. I've thought about it and I've decided to refrain from attempting this stunt until someone has my back =D! Walking on glass is pretty dangerous to, but these all can be performed very elegently if done with...intelligence? Haha. Has anyone is SMC ever tried this? If you have I'll be really really intrested in your thoughts on this stunt.

The stuffs that you mentioned has an element of risk in it but I don't think the risk is as high as putting a nail in the nose. It looks great but do it at your own risk. Why risk your life just to impress people? Wouldn't it be more impressive to stand in the middle of the road and dodge cars?

bigbadwolf - October 7, 2007 01:07 AM (GMT)
Crucify yourself, Sinch.

It's the holy grail of ending someone's life and it is SO MUCH MORE impressive.

Haha. Nah I'm not angry at anything, just giving you another idea. I don't even care if you are dead.

Why are you so random. -_-" No one asked YOU to perform it. And I reckon a crucifiction upsidedown escape would be very impressive. Any idea's for that anyone? I'm thinking maybe a rope escape for that maybe??? Maybe make it really really tense...dip it in a massive tank of water with a lock on it? Then escape before you drown! Curtain drops then BOOM your out! Sounds pretty crazy but it's also pretty do-able if you sorta think about it.

bigbadwolf...your comments aren't as unproductive as most people reading this thread would think...so keep them coming  . The whole crucifiction thing is offtopic...sorry guys =)! It's something to think about though. I bet it would generate massive publicity.

bmt - October 7, 2007 07:19 AM (GMT)
i dont think its stupid per se.. just that its not quite worth it u know? i mean yeah you impress people but the risk of not just injury but maybe even DEATH ,seeing how your nose is so close to the brain, is pretty high. there are better ways and less dangerous ways to impress people.

2 cents right there. =)

Cheers,
Bryan

I guess what Bigbadwolf is trying to say that it is not a smart thing to do (especially for magicians who are not specially trained for those acts.)

Why do you want to hammer a nail up your nose? Just to impress your friends?

Yes, Harry Houdini and Criss Angel did stunts that are more dangerous, but they did not do it just to impress their friends.

If you are well trained and you are performing on TV or to a huge crowd of audiences, then it is not stupid. Dangerous stunts are effective in getting the attention of audiences.

But if you are NOT well trained and you are just performing for your friends, please stick to less dangerous acts.

Guys, this form of magic is one of the most ancient stuff ever attempted by pseudo-spiritualists. Plain stupid? I doubt so.

Sinch, just to let you know, no one dies of "nail in nose" as far as I know of. If you do it correctly. I performed this effect to a bunch of adults before, the reactions are just simply amazing!

Most people think that such effects are likely to cause serious hurt and even death. I think that is pure nonsense. The material that I refer to have instructions clear enough that if you die trying, it only means you never read properly.

Personally, I eat glass and nail nails into my nostrils. It is fun to do, its just the gut factor that gets it started.

Once you (dare to)try it, you'll be hooked on this.

Magicdow - October 8, 2007 02:15 AM (GMT)
Are you going to take responsibilites if something goes wrong? No mishaps so far doesn't mean no mishaps forever. Heard of Murphy's Law?

Do it at your own risk, all you need to do is trip and fall while doing this and don't tell me you would never trip and fall. Accidents do happen.

I think the posts here already clearly tell you whether or not this effect is worth doing. Before you do it, consider whether this effect is worth taking the risk.
