Title: Dancing Cane
nottieboy - October 17, 2007 10:18 AM (GMT)
Hi everyone,
I have a dancing cane which is made from metal. Sometimes when I practise it's quite hard to do some move with a heavy cane. and hmmm.. in terms of angle, lightings. I'm still not sure in what kind of situation or rather place/stage should I perform dancing cane?. Usually, my right hand will be doing e work because I more use to my right-hand. However, is it better to get both hands working on it?? It don`t look very nice with my left hand sometimes. Any suggestions for that?
Thanks!
Edwin
P.S Sorry for asking too much qns at a time

A cane routine usually uses one hand most of the time. What I feel is you need to practice infront of the mirror more. Practice your movements without the cane. Visualise what you want to do first. Then, work towards that.
Think: How you want to look like to the audience when appearing to have some magical control over the cane? Think about your posture and how your left and right hand appear to be controlling the cane even though in actual fact it's your right hand that is doing the dirty job.
There are moves out there where you transfer from one hand to the other, but it's not really necessary. But if you can incorporate it, then why not.
For any kind of animated effect, it all really come down to the number of hours you spend practicing. You should find a music and move to it. Fix your moves. Practice until everytime you perform it, it's always the same. No impromptu moves whatsoever. Just a short 2mins routine is good. Don't go over if possible.

I see, initially I wanted to have a long routine like 5 mins. Well, think I better cut down on my routine because most of the moves are repeated. Thanks you very much for your advise! yea, I still working on the music to work on it. Dancing cane will be an effect whereby it should be do it gracefully and nicely. Will work on it, thanks for advises!
Edwardjb, the cane I'm using now is hmm.. not very sure where it is manufactured. I bought it at a local magic shop, they recommended me e metal one which looks better. DVD, if i'm not wrong Dancing Cane 101 by David Mann is e DVD i saw which only discuss about different move using e cane. I don`t watch DVD, i just keep practising e same move over and over again.

Just go watch some performance videos of dancing cane on youtube. There are probably some good ones out there. You can figure out roughly how the moves are done since you already know the workings. You can even try create your own moves.
Yeah. Maximum you should go for dancing cane is 3mins. That is also not good in my opinion. Just do a short one, and let the audience wonder. Once you do too long, audience are fast to catch. Cheers!

ya, i agree with what AhLiShuFi had said. for my opinion,if it take too long to perform, the audience will feel bored because the trick is repeated. some more the audience will not fell so impressive as the beginning. :P
the magic boutique had recommended me the precision magic one, it is aluminium, so will more lighter, more easy to perform.
perhap i can buy it on next month,(this month abit over budget and my girlfriend start nagging on me liao, haha.) so that we can have discussion and some idea exchange.

cool! Precision magic, very nice and in silver colour. Mine cane, well I can say it is like those old fashion cane where elderly people use it in the 60/70s. It is nice! because it got the antique look. Edward, probably after u got your cane we can meet up and discuss further on. ^_^

hey I've got some questions,
I got a dancing cane from Fukai during a magic convention 2 yrs ago. Now the Silver plastic paint has cracked and is looking quite fugly. Any idea how to fix it ???
Also, the IT that I use is running low as i also redo the Prop before each performance and practice.
The IT is quite unusual as it does not pop up under lighting from the front

WOW! Fukai cane is very good! No idea about how to fix it. But i guess u can just find some replacement material and glue it on if you think it's necessary. As for the IT, I'm sure there are replacements on the net.

Finally, i get my aluminium dancing can last week.
the cane is cool, i love ot so much..
now i pratice to handle the cane's movement first everday before i have my own routine.
it's not too differecult to handle the cane, i'm sure i can perforn it well after having several time of pratice.
BlUeCoWz - November 12, 2007 04:03 PM (GMT)
i would suggest you train both hands to handle it well.. i made a mistake of using my stronger hand... but balanced better :D
Edwardjb - November 13, 2007 09:43 AM (GMT)
i think i will train my both hand to handle the cane.
i am not left handed, so i have to try more harder to control the movement of the cane with my left hand.
