Title: Hi Everyone. I Am New Here. I Hope To Learn Magic
Description: I wish to learn magic. Can Anyone teach

Angel_heart - December 30, 2004 12:51 PM (GMT)
Hi Hi Hi my nick angel_heart. You can call me Thomas.

I am very keen to learn magic but I wish to learn card trick and close-up magic trick. Any advice from anyone that where or who I can learn from ? iI don't mind paying someone to teach me too, I am really really really very keen.
Can someone teach me please ? ??????

Magicdow - December 30, 2004 12:57 PM (GMT)
There' ll be people who'll tell you they can teach you tricks for $25 each. My advice, don't waste time on these people. Start like how most of us did. Read beginner's book, go to a library.

Some recomended books are Mark Wilson's Complete Book Of Magic. You can get this from Borders for about $35. If they don't stock it, ask them to order it at no additional charge.

Another interesting book is Magic for dummies.

Winder - December 30, 2004 12:59 PM (GMT)
Thomas, if you really want to pay people. Pay it to the professional, nowadays i see alot of "Magicians" trying to sell their effects. If you really want to pay and learn there would be some alternatives like e.g

1) Lawrence School of Magic
2) Magic Castle (Shaw Tower)
3) Books or DVDs

Explore this ART yourself, as it would be even more meaningful. I meet alot of people who are interested and when magicians recommend them to join this and that, they start to lose interest after a few months.

Try to take it slow and easy, explore it as those who explore themselves have in turn tend to stay for a very long time.

Anyway infomation for anyone, if you spot any "magician" selling effects outside, check out their price and speak to them in a nice way.

I found out that 1 Magician actually selling effects for $5 and i told him the truth about the Art of magic and he decided not to sell any of his effects. But afterall it's still his decision but i told him if he wanna sell, Teach them well, tell them the Magician Code which is the MOST important of all and to actually not to sell at the price of $5 cause no one would appericate a magic effect of $5.

Especially layman ~

Angel_heart - December 30, 2004 01:00 PM (GMT)

But Ithe problem is If we don't understand how the magic is been done through the book, can anyone explain ? That is the hard thing for a person to do with a book. Any advice ?

Winder - December 30, 2004 01:01 PM (GMT)
Then get a Magic DVD, anyway Welcome to the forum, i think i didn't welcome you yet. Hahaha :)

Angel_heart - December 30, 2004 01:05 PM (GMT)

Thank for welcoming me. Anyway normally where do you hang-out practicing magic ? Can I join you also ? Will you be my mentor ?

iamthewalrus - December 30, 2004 01:05 PM (GMT)
Thomas, hi!

No problems, sure we can help with learning magic through a book. I remember doing that when I was younger, and yes, you just have to ask! Here!

And yes, take the posts from Winder and Magicdow to heart. What they said is very true. Lots of scammy offers for teaching nowadays. Terrible. The Code, after all, is paramount.

Need help, just ask! Have fun learning!

Ok thank for the great advice. So in future i don't understand, I ask you loh. Can ?

Ok for beginner, what advice do you have for me I wanna learn magic trick ?

Magicdow - December 30, 2004 01:11 PM (GMT)
Buy a book first and see how it goes from there. Magicians are a special breed of species. They are selfish and won't share things easily, You have to prove that you're really interested in magic before anyone will share with you.

Start with a simple book, I'm sure you can learn something from it.

Hi Thomas !! welcome to the forum

Winder - December 30, 2004 01:18 PM (GMT)
I think it would be nice if you could actually join us on 7th January 2005 (Friday) 6:30pm, we are having an Outing A.K.A The SMC Magic Competition. You will see some of the best magicians we have in here performing, they have the drive, the experience and everything you would like to see in magic.

After that maybe you can ask them some questions. :)

Haha! Thanks! You're welcome!

Whenever in doubt, ask! Fire away! We're ALL here to help!

Beginners should be entirely indiscriminate in learning. I know newbies who, quite sadly, avoid some tricks because of "obvious secrets" and things like that. No secret is obvious unless the performer makes it so.

Have fun learning! We've all given you lots to think about! Go forth, Thomas!

I feel its alway good for beginner to take a look at this type of place.

Winder - December 30, 2004 01:31 PM (GMT)
Sorry we don't have lessons for any new starting magician, if you have any doubts at any outing. You can actually clarify with us the effect that you have doubts with.

Date : 7th Jan 2005
Time : 6 pm
Venue : Munchie Monkey Cafe, NUS

Help us organise by confirming your name in the guest list as early as you can if you are coming. THANK YOU!

Check the SMC Magic Competition Section :)

Magicdow - December 30, 2004 01:31 PM (GMT)
You can join outings but don't expect magicians to teach you. You have to understand ethics. Things like "how did you do it?" is seldom asked by magis.

I'll be frank with you, I won't share things with you even if you attend the outings. But if I get to know you better or you've prove that you are serious about our art, I can share most things with you.

I don't get 1 point is that, what is the membership for ?

Pseudo - December 30, 2004 01:40 PM (GMT)
Hi Angel_heart...

Like what winder had said... Its best to Explore the wonders of magic yourself.

The best source for magic is the library and bookshop...

I don't really recommand Royal road to card magic to newbies as it restrict you to only card effects. Its a good book but you might want to put that on hold first.

Look for the book "Magic for dummies" mentioned by Magicdow. It has different varieties of magic effect which you can learn.

Initally, I face problems learning from books too. I had to read through many times before I fully understand what the paragraph is writing about.

And yes... do join our coming outing on 7th Jan...

GordonLi - December 30, 2004 01:41 PM (GMT)
hi, welcome!

Winder - December 30, 2004 01:42 PM (GMT)
I think you guys are really confusing him with Castle stuff, why not let him come for the competition first, then we can slowly explain to him at the Outing cause not all magicians join Castle. So just explain to him at the outing and see what is his decision.

ok basicically ... i dont really have to join the membership... but,..... if u buy a trick there ... it will cost $50 ...... but with a membership? its $25... what do u think?

if u are not a member no selling back of DVDs.....

yeah .... try going there yourself ... and experience it .. Solomon will tell u everything...

Hello angel_heart, welcome to the forum...

Magic Castle is one of a number of magic shops in singapore. Being a beginner, you really have to jump into joining their membership straight away.

Like Magicdow said, it would be much more beneficial for you to get a book that introduces you to magic and cover some of the basic magic theories. I understand that books can be quite a bother to read, but they usually cover the most ground and the most value for money.
An alternative is getting a beginner's magic videos or DVD which starts you off. A good basic one is Micheal Ammar's Amazing Secrets of Card Magic.

For magic shops, there are quite a few in singapore. Whatever you do, DON'T buy ANYTHING from Magic Wand in Lucky Plaza B)
Then there's Ang's house of Magic at Penisula Plaza, Magic Castle at Shaw Towers, Magic Supreme at Park Mall.
I STRONGLY suggest you check them all out and compare their prices on a few items before deciding on which one to buy from. You will be surprised by how much the same item can differ.
We also have a few dealers in this forum that can suggest things to you and get stuff for you if you want. Check out the Marketplace section.

I hope you are really interestied and i didn't write all that for nothing B)

Cheers

Hello Angel Heart, nice to meet you! Welcome anyway and enjoy your stay here as much as possible.

Yeah, you have to be committed to practise and dedicate yourself 101% to magic, a Lifelong thing. Be prepared to hold on to your decks and practise for hours daily... B)

And be prepared to pay a HELL lot of cash for tricks... But MOST of them are worth it .(get reviews of the tricks etc 1st, before deciding on whether to get or not...)

Yeah, try going to Castle alone, and see for yourself. ;) And try to read widely on all matters Magic, they will increase your knowledge and exposure. :)

May your journey be Magical. :D

i bet all the guys who clicked this thread were expecting another gal haha... well at least that's wat happened with me... anyway u can try the libraries, they have a couple of decent books on magic, if i still remember correctly it's under the section 793.18 or sthg like that... ask your nearest friendly librarian. you'll learn the basics of magic (misdirection, patter etc) and also some very basic, but essential moves (eg false shuffles, palms etc). so it's really up to u to put in the effort.
