Title: Moving Pips
Description: Origins?

mattlee - November 27, 2007 02:52 AM (GMT)
This is for the magic historians out there.

Does anyone know the origins of the moving pips effect?

I know that the effect was already around in the mid 80s as a stage effect involving jumbo cards, but does anyone know the originator? Does it go further back than that?

Thanks for your time.

Someone told me it was a Japanese magician.
Not sure though.

The origin of the moving pips go back decades. The gimmick appeared in the 1970s. It was a jumbo card back then and was mainly used for stage shows.

In 1981, Michael Ammar released an effect "visually yours" that used the same gimmick but in poker size.

Over the years, there are other moving pips gimmick on the market.
Like Moving Pips by Rob Bromley, Moving Point by Seo Magic and New Era Moving pips in 5x5 Japan etc.

By the way, I had deleted most of your posts.

According to Tomo Maeda's Five Times Five (1992), he quoted "the early type of visible changing cards were described in German by Conradi over a hundred years ago and several years later in English by August Roterberg in New Era Card Tricks (1897). Even A.C. Gilbert described several simplified versions in his one-hundred and twenty-page book on card magic whch was included with his magic sets for the public during the late 1920"

Hope this info helps.

I have the Rob Bromley's one. It is VERY well made. I had 2 of such gimmick actually, 1 which is from Rob and another one from a local magic shop at meridian.

Rob's version is basically the same, but the gimmick actually includes a 'button' when you execute the effect. The 'execution' is so easy, just try not to overdo it. I got mine for about SG$25, worth the price. Totally!

I think our fellow member, Doublelifter has this too. I remember I bought it from him.

As for the local version, don't waste your time. Mine broke within a couple of usage.

Yup, Rob Bromley's one is the best. It is much more durable than the other version i came across.
