Hey Guys!
This convention is really going to be VERY useful to anyone who wishes to perform magic for children, so if you are interested in performing for children don't miss the chance!!
Shawn's really great at performing for kids (Kids LURRRVE Captain Amazing!!) so you will be able to pick up gems of knowledge for performing for kids from him! J C is well... J C (let's skip the accolades for him, shall we?) and you'd be able to pick on his brains for his thoughts on performing for kids during this convention. And of course, Singapore's only Female Magician is going to be hosting the convention too, so how could you miss this? *grin*
Besides, I've been to the Arts House before, and its really a nice place. :) So do register for the convention (afterall you get special discounts too!) and see you there!
Cheerios,
Ade ^_^

There are two lectures for the convention. Lecture by Shawn Chua (aka Captain Amazing) is for all participants of the convention. As for the second lecture/workshop, you get to choose between the two choices below according to your level in magic.

The package we have put together consists of the props we will be using in the basic workshop. It is specifically designed for beginners in magic who are looking for simple but effective magic effects to perform for kids.
You can buy this for the workshop and put it into use after the workshop. It will be available on Magic Boutique shortly. :)
As for comfortable clothings, well... You will want to be comfortable for the workshop won't you? ;)

Hi Guys,
I don't really post on the forum unless if its really necessary.
Anyway, I would like to share with you all a true story about one of my close magician friends. I wont mention any names but lets just call him Jon.
Jon does close up gigs here and there, and one day he had a request from a client to do a kids birthday party. Jon had no experience in this field what so ever but he took it up just for the experience. After the gig, he told me that he felt that the kids were not as responsive as he expected even though he did what he thought was some of his best material. I have seen Jon perform close up before and i know that his sleights and presentation are excellent. But i knew exactly what went wrong.
He had always performed magic for adults previously and kids magic is a different ball game altogether. Many magicians these days think that they can entertain any crowd with there flawless skills but sad to say those knuckle busting sleights doesnt appeal to kids. Some might ask, if that amazing effect doesnt get the kids going then what will?
If you have ever felt the same way as Jon, I strongly encourage you to take up the workshop. Kids are a challenging type of audience and i know you will take home valuable tips, skills and knowledge on entertaining children at the lecture. I hope to see you guys there.
Cheers,
Sherman

Oh yes I totally agree with that!! Things that work wonders on adults may fell totally Flat on children. There's a whole different world of knowledge altogether if you want to do magic for kids. :)
Anyways, the convention's gonna be fun and informative so do register if you're interested. Even if you do mostly close-up, you won't know when and if your client will request that you do a kid's show for his/her kid's party. *grin*
M.A.D. - January 10, 2008 12:36 AM (GMT)
i also agree with mr adeline and sherman on this, i had learn trick long but when i do the last show at a church for just a size of 100 children, i lost them, only 50% with me, sad right, ;)
so if by God will and i had the time i will be there to learn from them Shawn Chua and JC Sum. B)
if you really want to be in the field of magic, go for it. B)
o by the way, Ms Ning are you teaching someday? i still can not forget your floating swam.
LarryDK - January 10, 2008 10:59 AM (GMT)

yong_tianadeline - January 12, 2008 07:30 AM (GMT)
Hey Bone.
Ning's busy so let me help with the questions on the convention. :) You're correct, the first one is the so-called 'Compulsory' lecture. The other lecture is based on your level of magic:
1) “Show Production for Live Kids Shows” - Pro Lecture by J C Sum
OR
2) “Easy but Amazing Magic Tricks for Kids” - Basic Workshop by The Mighty Magic Factory Team
1) is for magicians who already have some knowledge of magic. In this lecture, J C will share about show production specifically for kids show. 2) is a basic workshop conducted for people who have little or no knowledge of magic. This workshop will teach simple and basic effects that they can learn to amaze the children.
Basically, if you already have some knowledge of magic, you can choose 1). If you have no or little knowledge of magic, take 2) instead.
Hope that helps!!
Ade.

Just thought I'd say this in case you aren't aware... there's also going to be lay people around (that's why much thought has been put in to segregate the 2 groups accordingly with different lecturers), as well as, some people from the media (magazine reporters, etc) at the event.
Also, those who've personally called/ SMSed me to say they want to go for the event, please post your names accordingly here on SMC so we can consolidate the list and send you the promo code via PM.
You can then proceed to
Magic Babe's Magic Boutique (hehehe) to order your tickets and get your special SMC discount using the promo code given to you.
If anyone's got any queries about
Hocus Pocus: Focus on Kids - magic micro convention, please feel free to holler!
See you guys soon!
Ning :)
Mabas - January 22, 2008 11:27 AM (GMT)
This should be a really useful event for those thinking of performing for kids. :D And I can say it can sometimes be hard to perform your normal magic stuff for them since sometimes they cant understand what you are performing eg. ACR or any other card tricks. Haa.. Crowd control is also impt, especially when performing for them since they can get all naughty. ;) In short, I think this is a really good opportunity to start if one is trying to perform for kids. :D
Be there or be a square! (or maybe some other fun geometrical shape :P)

LarryDK - January 30, 2008 06:03 PM (GMT)
Hey all, The convention just ended a few hours ago.
My comments for this convention:
There should be more!! Maybe the future Conventions will be a various different approach towards a much more professional performance for the magicians.
But for this convention, as the approach is towards kid's show, I guess thats could be the reason why people are not interested to go.
Well, the convention is worth the money, I will say, it worth more. I took up the pro lecture with JC Sum and he give many many tips and details on how a performance starts and ends. From packaging, to presenting the effects. And I am very sure that its not just for kids show. It can be used for almost any paid gigs that you are going to have.
As for the other part of the show, it is interesting to know how to work around in a kids show as we know that kids, can be the worst hazard to a magician, snatching your props, etc. And Shawn and the rest, gave a very clear input and tips for us.
Well, we are made to sit on the floor like kids, but i guess it delivers the idea better in this way. :)
Well done Ning, Shawn, JC Sum and the rest. Its definately a great convention that I attended.
Ning - January 31, 2008 02:33 AM (GMT)
Thanks Larry :)
Last evening's magic micro convention is extremely different from the one we had around the same time last year, which was completely for magicians and only magicians. Hocus Pocus: Fous on Kids basically benefits all adults who wish to connect better with kids through magic and more. It's not just for magicians who want to learn about kids magic and those curious about the psychology of children (you probably already know how vastly different it is performing for adults and kids!).
We had plenty of social workers, educators, hospital workers, charity volunteers and various working professionals from various organisations that deal closely with children. I had a nice chat with some of them "muggles" during our 3hour+ session at The Arts House  The venue at the Blue Room was really cosy, because it allowed privacy when the 2 groups separated out into the pros (at the smaller inner room) & the beginners at the different stations.
I think about 30 or so magicians (about 1/3 from SMC... you guys know who you are ;)) went for J C's pro lecture which would benefit magicians who seriously want to start producing a stellar show for their kids act. The rest of the Mighty Magic Factory team worked with the complete beginners in magic and a group I worked with mentioned that they really believe magic would brighten up the day of their charity beneficiaries... I just had to agree, because that's a BIG reason why I've always rooted for SMC to be involved with charity since day 1 when we started from a small forum back in 2004.
One of the participants from last night actually asked me directly why the Mighty Magic Factory team wasn't afraid of "competition". It was a fair question from a magician :) I guess, while most performers usually are tight-lipped about their 'secrets', we're not insecure and gladly pass on what we know to those serious about magic, to help elevate the art. I think this is also how a performer can improve, else you'd just stay stagnant.
J C's been producing school shows for Health Promotion Board and very recently, NFEC, and he's also the mentor of all our professional kids performers. The man's a genius when it comes to show production. If you didn't know you'd think he's just a high-end corporate performer, because that's what he's known for! Shawn as Captain Amazing has done hundreds of edutainment gigs as well and everyone just loves him. Haha... Check out the upcoming March/ April issue of Science Spy magazine for his 4 page exclusive interview with spiffy photos.
Anyway, a layperson participant from Science Centre, and another from Snow City, actually commented to us that they may just have a magic theme in the works soon for their organisations. Pretty cool to think we inspired these decision-makers to want to hire magicians for their company events later this year. It doesn't matter if they book us or some other magician here... I felt we've already successfully made them interested in magic and this is great for our magic community!
Many thanks to those of you from SMC who made time on a mid-week Wednesday evening to come by to the Arts House for our event. The response was really quite positive and everyone seemed happy - but most importantly - those who I approached shared that they felt that the sessions greatly benefited them. Awesome, I say *grin* The general response seems really warm and many thanks to those who urged us for another one this year but it reeeeeally depends on our schedules.
Once again, thanks for wonderful support. It was really great having all of you guys there!
Cheers,
Ning: on behalf of the Mighty Magic Factory team ^_^

After taking my time to rest and absorb the ideas at the convention, here is my review:
The convention was really great. The first lecture with Shawn was really an eye opener into the mindset of kids. The various age range of kids and the different expectation of kids. This is really important if you want to perform for kids as they behave differently from adults and you need to tweak your presentation a bit to cater to them.
Next up was the breakdown section for those who didnt have magic background and the Pro Lecture by JC. The Pro Lecture was good. He explained on how to better routine yourself by using cue cards, manage your props and more. The best part that I loved was his presentation of Rocky Raccoon. It was so cute!! Haa.. Anyway he also showed us his 5 ring routine and Miser's Dream. He even explained and showed us his handling. How cool is that? And the price of the convention ticket? S$30 and that is without discount. And you get to learn all about kids and some cool routines. How cool is that?
In short. MORE CONVENTIONS. :g:
