Hi William,
For a new student of card magic, I would recommend you to pick up the following first,
1) Born To Perform by Oz Pearlman
http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=6182) The Royal Road to Card Magic (book)
http://www.murphysmagic.com/s.nl/it.A/id.759/.fAs for coins, it would be
1) Coin Magic Made Easy Vol 1 by David Roth
http://www.murphysmagic.com/s.nl/it.A/id.954/.f?category=2) Bobo's Modern Coin Magic (book)
http://www.murphysmagic.com/s.nl/it.A/id.751/.fAll these teaches you the basics and the books alone should keep you busy for awhile. If I were you, I'll focus on one type of magic first.
Enjoy your stay ^_^

Hi,
Good thing that you actually went to website to check out on DVDs, well, do not worry about the pricing because I can guarantee that it is worth the spent! First thing, it takes alot of work to produce the Dvd contents such as research on certain moves, sleights and for a start it is important that you remember the original name of the move so that it will benefits you when you need some help on certain part of a trick/routine.
You can start off by the stuff named by bigbadwolf, these item are great! Probably you can start off for Dvds first which allows you to easily absorb the contents. Regarding fat fingers, etc, don`t worry it won`t be a problem as there is couple of ways in a move. And size don`t really matters, what matter is able to entertain others with joy.
Hope this will help you alittle.
Remember DVDs are a good start because many hardwork and contents are found in DVDs.
Cheers!
Edwin

good that you join us into the magic world...
1 thing to take note,
This is not going to be a cheap hobby, in fact an expensive one.
I spend around like 5 digits since i started off. B)

Fat fingers are better for sleights. No holes peeping between fingers and it covers more areas.
Books will give you more effects for a cheap price, and the books recommended by bigbadwolf are foundational.
DVDs can be expensive, but it may be worth watching them over and over again to pick up on angles, timing/pacing and delivery of things to say, and the overall mood of an effect. It makes learning easier and it is certainly easier to learn presentation skills by watching a magic performance compared to reading it.

I always like to recommend 'Mark Wilson's Book - Complete Course in Magic', its a thick black book, definately available in Border's bookshop at Weelock Place, you can check out the book first to see if you like it before you buy it.
