Hi, Im Sam, probably one of the newest guys here. Im not really professional yet but fairly able to do relatively quite ok tricks and flourishes. I usually do it for entertainment, not to like boast or anything. but sometimes when i do a trick in front of my friends and of course they will be curious wondering how it is done. I dont reveal it to them, telling them that it is really underground and sometimes faking them said i paid learning that trick, and the secret can't be just released. Well that is definately common for magicians but the after reaction i get when they start to say Im selfish and like wa lan dun wanna share, not sporting la, sometimes really pisses me off when they keep bugging you. I personally respect other magicians when they show me a trick, ( of course you would want to know how it is done ) but you dun go like asking them please la please la tell me la, wa liao selfish la you.. all that bull shit. Just interested to knowing how some of you guys will react when you get this kind of reaction after showing normal layman ( friends ) a trick or 2. Feel free to comment, Im really open or am i responding to them wrongly. haha. this is my first post. anyway, hope to see some of you guys this friday, im really excited.

Well, what I like to do is to just use other means to change the subject...
"How you do one?!?!"
"I got broken nose... *CRACK*"
Or even better, use that as a lead-on to another effect
"Eh, show us how to do lah..."
"Okay, okay... it's because you're hallucinating with that *coin* in your ear... see?"
Find what works for ya. And remember, don't be weak. They can call you what you want, but it's you who determine who you are. Aight? :D

Hello Sam!
Well good on you! I know what you're saying, and personally, I think not telling secrets is absolutely fine. Magic without the mystery is nonsense. And while it's extremely irritating, people ALWAYS bug for secrets. And you know what? That's a wonderful compliment that they like your magic! You must have performed so well they just want your skills.
They want the secrets so much they'll pester you till the cows come home and have supper, I know, but a magician who respects the code of doctrine understands that magic is NOTHING without the secrecy.
The chaps bothering you would do well to know this well. Do they know, and respect, this in the first place?
If they grow to be trustworthy exponents if the art, you decide to tell them or not. Magicians are not merely sideshow performers with routines; we're also proud custodians of their secrets. You decide if you want to tell them or not, and be certain you have a good reason to, or not to. I'm sure you'll be able to tell. Keep magic alive!

Hi Sam.... anyway ... whenever they ask me how to do ... i will *Teach* them.... try getting dream vanish from Magic castle ( shaw towers ) and so call "Teach" them how to do it.... your coin dissappear ..... and theirs dosent ... nd then simply tell them.... because your coind did not dissappear... the cain tells us that u are not fit to be a magician...lol ... dont say that .... thats insulting... tell them that because their coin did not vanished ... its tells You that u are not ready.... yeah....
if people who havent got this effect dont get me wrong the "teach" is not teaching... go ask anyone whom u know that has this effect.....

Hello Sam. All these happened to me perviously, so you are not alone. But now, I have devise a way to divert their attention of wanting to learn or know the secrets. Yeah, it takes quite alot of guts to ''reject'' your friends in just a cold manner. I have yet to master how to deal properly and professionally, yet be able prevent spoilt frendships. So I do also need some really tested and proven techniques in dealing those bothersome laypeople.
Thanks. ^_^

Relax man, it's not selfish, it's about upholding the code of conduct. So it's fine that you keep it as a secret and never leak it out. :)
magi81 - January 5, 2005 02:47 AM (GMT)
Just freaking tell them you need to be gay to do that..
illusionist - January 5, 2005 04:17 AM (GMT)
SAm you did the right thing so no worries about it lol.. what they like to call you is their bussiness.. Magic is mean to be serect and mgical.. So if your friends still bugged you you tell them ok.. I will show you another trick if you can catch me you are ready to learn if not hahahaha.. just lets be friends till you are really to get into magic lol.. Crap :P
Ning - January 5, 2005 05:12 AM (GMT)
Tell them to join SMC, our SECRET MAGICAL CULT... if they're really genuine.
Otherwise, charge them $25 for the lamest tricks :P I'm kidding.
You did the right thing, don't worry about your friends' immaturity. You'd regret it if you actually thought them everythig you knew... they'd just become another addition to Singapore's present generation of icky hecklers.
Desmond - January 5, 2005 06:09 AM (GMT)
or u can ignore them and perform ur tricks on some1 else :P
ren8585 - January 5, 2005 08:31 AM (GMT)
proud , arrogant , selfish ... who cares? let them call u whatever they want...
SeNgHoE - January 5, 2005 09:24 AM (GMT)
WA LAO SO SELFISH NV TEACH UR FRENS..
HAHA JOKING MAN.
My class ppl oso like dat, eh eh do that again. Teach me lah so i can go around trick ppl.. -_- I was friggin pissed off too.. lol..
Brendan - January 5, 2005 09:35 AM (GMT)
haha... this is so common..lol.. for me.. i dont teach them... seriously man... if everyone in this world teach people whenever they hear teaach teach me and beg and beg.... walau.. then the whole world knows la.. and then the art of magic is not magical anymore.
seriously u should not teach anyone how an effect is done. u can lie to them watever u want to stop them bugging u. and never admit a move... as in for example... oh i see that u *** the cards.... blah blah... and if its true or watever just say.. wat?? no la..serious.. i did not and its really real one.. watch.... and do the same effect again but alternate move... im talking abt the ACR and effects like that where u can alternate the moves. they just dont see it... all they do is guessing. and if u fail and effect.. make a joke out of it.. dont admit u made a mistake lol.
being a magician u should know how to handle pressure and all. dont let any laymen put u down... we magicians have sum gifts and knowledge that laymen dont. if they cant respect u.... well dont respect them. u are who u are and magicians always keep the secret code. cheers!
illusionist - January 5, 2005 09:46 AM (GMT)
Well said magicb looks like I can learn something from you too lol... :D
zinally - January 5, 2005 12:44 PM (GMT)
Definitely it is the most stupid thing to do when u do magic then u tell the secret except under life threaten situation. Anyway if they persist tell them u do it for fun if there's no fun example they keep on pestering just don't do it for them again. :P

Slightly Off topic, but...
Im sure some of the newer ones are guilty of doing a trick and describing how its done at the same time. this is because:
1. it wont seem so embarrassing if theyre caught
2. the method of the trick is much better than how they can pull it off at that moment in time.
i have seen pp do this and I hope you guys do not.. if you really like a trick, practice till you're good before you show it off.. ;)
Mabas - January 5, 2005 01:37 PM (GMT)
If they ask you to teach, say to pay you $25 first. Ha. Just joking. Seriously, you should try to explain to them that you invested alot of time and money into it therefore you can't reveal.

ok let me be the first to admit .. i used to be one of them  i believe im not the only one here.. most of the people who just started magic often tell secrets to close friends :ph43r: :ph43r: :ph43r: ren hides .. hahaha
CLJ - January 5, 2005 02:09 PM (GMT)
Personally? I share the stuff I do with my close friends, whether they're laymen or magicians, because they're people I can trust.
And...yeah, Daryl made some good points as well.

MUAHAHAHA. Just pretend to snap out of a trance and ask them what are they talking about! MUAHAHAHA.
iamthewalrus - January 6, 2005 06:42 AM (GMT)
wow, this thread's attracting a lot of attention. Great!
Just be glad that people like your act enough to pester you on how it's done.
Telling secrets is everyone's decision. Just don't make decisions you'll regret.
Brendan - January 6, 2005 06:47 AM (GMT)
lol... there were a few times.. like i tell a secret to a laymen coz he seems to interested and all... but regret doing so after a while coz it seems that he was not as keen as i tot he was. lol.. hehe... that was ages ago... but now.. i never tell anyone. we can share amongst magicians... but laymen.. u gotta watch out.. :)
[Ling] - January 6, 2005 08:02 AM (GMT)
Ok, i have decided just to share my magic with duper duper duper CLOSE friends only - actually only one guy that has proven to me that he's really serious about magic just now, after about 3 months of him begging me. LOL...
But i'm not gonna let him know the secret of the many secrets in Magic, of cos. So Magic is not at stake. ;)

That's right girl....keep them wanting and they will keep coming back.
That's the way to handle all guys in all situations. B)
[Ling] - January 6, 2005 08:21 AM (GMT)
Thanks for that affirmation, Aloy. Haha, now i'm preaching Magic to him via MSN... He's blur to the core. Now i know how i looks like to others when I'm a noob... lol.

Great to see us helping each other out! Newbies need help the most, and it's better when they know they're newbies. Then they absorb more quicker. Hmm, I know of bad examples, but that's another story.
vampire_magus89, good to see that your decision is sound and very normal. Just make sure your keep the spirit growing in you! And your friends! It'll be great when our country breaks away from the heckler mentality we are all familiar with!

Thanks for that, iamthewarlus. It's just an effort to keep magic alive and going. :)
sammyp10 - January 6, 2005 04:00 PM (GMT)
hey thanks for all your replies.
i was havin some trouble logging in to reply this , they kept prompting me for my username and password thing.. irritating, maybe im missing out something cos im not very familiar yet. anyhow i had bad experiences also. which i admit i shared with one guy, really really regretted it man. now he acts as if he is mr know it all. irritating, when i show him something else, teh pestering starts again. but no way man.. " wa liao not bludder ( brother ) enough la"fed up. honestly its quite true, " a magician, ( except among close friends ) is a selfish fella. not that he wants to be but to keep the secret dude. maybe ill try CRACKING my nose or something after their reaction.
Anyway, im really excited, ( awaiting my resources ) - waiting for 2 dvds which i ordered. but still haven arrived yet. my first two. most prob most of you guys have it already. " I NEED MY RESOURCES !!! " come to me quickly baby !!!
