Title: Tcs 5 Getting Out Of Hand?
heartsofclubs - January 9, 2005 02:27 PM (GMT)
Refering to Sunday 10pm Psychics revealed...
Who has the urge of calling channel 5 or writing in collectively to show disagreement with such exposure? Or has such exposure been too common you wont really bother imparting your concern over it?
Just an open question.. share your views..
Anyway.. due to it.. i've been getting quite a few smses saying," You've been exposed" (Generally same meaning.. but different methods of phrasing..) any one of you kena too? =)

Currently no, for the Guy Bavli notepad thingy, somethign related to Guy Bavli which i did it in 1 of my parlour performance, it was pretty sad. I got a very good applause for that and now they revealed it, i am freaking sad now.

Listen up people.
The programme was not harmful to magicians at all. Look at all the methods that have been exposed. They were the obvious ones - those you can find by reading books in the library.
Why bother complaining to TCS? They can air what they want, and the programme is beneficial because it helps people from being duped by fake 'mediums'. What if your family members and friends got duped? You wouldn't like that right. We're entertainers, but these 'mediums' claim to have real psychic ability.
Come on guys, we've got better stuff than this!
So don't fret, think up of better methods and improve magic as a whole.

I kind of agree with this. I think the main damage this kind of programs cause is that it tarnishes the image of magic as an art as a whole. There was definitely some harm done is exposing the methods as though we may not use the exact same methods, we might use the same ideas. But I think worse is the creation of the impression that we are just phonies and trying to con people when our primary purpose is entertainment. In the same way some will associate what we do with the ability to cheat in casinos, they may associate us with these kind of "psychics"

Did anyone tape this? I'd like to see it, but missed it... was busy playing pool!

Initially I was quite peeved upon learning that TCS was gonna air a show that reveal magic's secrets.
And check this out (sms I received from a good friend whom I performed several times to): "Hey bro! Check out Channel 5. Got something you're interested in...magic! lol"
Next sms from the same guy: "And they're revealing secrets! hahaha!"
Didn't catch the show because I was at the hospital visiting my granny. But after asking my friend about the show's contents, I heaved a great sigh of relief. This isn't really meant to attack mainstream magic...more like an informative programme probably to eliminate the chances of being conned by fake mediums like what Kryptikalism said.
I just hope TCS doesn't go overboard and start revealing tricks like ACR and Passes and stuff. That would really be a kick in the head.
kryptikalism - January 9, 2005 05:14 PM (GMT)
thanks for agreeing with me guys...
if they were to expose secrets like the cups and balls and ambitious card routine and stuff which really require sleight of hand, then i'll be worried. very worried.
but the show just now was crap.
nothing good at all.
which is good for us.
Kevin - January 10, 2005 01:47 AM (GMT)
Hehe.... no one read my posts in the other thread? Burr.
Just turn the tables on the laymen, and inform them that the people informing them that they are being conned are actually the conmen themselves! Talk about conspiracies...

actually they didnt relate this to magic at all..
its just wanting to explain about people who can read mind.
like tarot cards or physic reader or something.
if u guys watched, it showed that physic 'shop' haha..
its not targetted for magic la... but people will forget.
and i also learned a few great stuff.
well most a definite gimmick or a crazy preperation or some accomplise.
anyways, as long as close up is not revealed. its ok . haha
[Ling] - January 10, 2005 07:42 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I feel not so furious now after seeing that that show didn't went overboard to reveal close up or anything sleight of hands etc.
Anyway that magician in that show has no apparent facial expressions, what's up with that?!
zinally - January 10, 2005 09:23 AM (GMT)
Actually Farid is correct cos if they expose 20 tricks we have 1000 more tricks to perform. We are a performer not a faker and don't take the expose thing seriously if u can't do anything about it..BTW Congrats for the success of SMC competition the only thing I believe to improve the presentation all the competitor should give special thanks to the inventor of the routine that they r doing cos they r judge by a consider a profound magician so at least the judge will no what they will look upon when the contestant doing the routine example the smooth execution of the sleight or passes for ranking them. These way also it is a step towards recognise people who r the people behind the routine. For I am sure another 5 years from now a lot of boys will mention Kevin as their mentor for their fluorish routine. In the competition most of the contestant say "I am not a cheater or this is not cheating" when they execute the routine.Again but not least SMC ROCKS! :D
Desmond - January 10, 2005 09:44 AM (GMT)
i tink the show is not too bad cause most of the tricks require gimmicks ^_^
Kevin - January 10, 2005 11:37 AM (GMT)
Hey zinally, thanks for the reference, but do try and use some punctuation in your posts. I think that if you actually read what you wrote out loud, you'd run out of breath faster than you could say
"BTW Congrats for the success of SMC competition the only thing I believe to improve the presentation all the competitor should give special thanks to the inventor of the routine that they r doing cos they r judge by a consider a profound magician so at least the judge will no what they will look upon when the contestant doing the routine example the smooth execution of the sleight or passes for ranking them."
Tell the truth, I think that crediting the inventor and all is just a really (for lack of a better word) burr-doingg idea. I mean, the whole point of the magic competition. is not just "Hey, look, guys... I've been practicing this shit for 16 years up in the mountains... everything is FLAWLESS, no?"
Not. The. Point.
Hell, a good sleight is one you can't see. Like when Huron made the card change on top of the deck at one of the previous outings:
"What the hell was that?!?!"
"A Riffle Pass"
"YOU DID A RIFFLE PASS!??! *#@&*^#&^#"
Plus, there were plenty laymen at the competition, too. And they were the ones who made the final decision. One of the key aspects of magic is to try and appear like you're giving the attenders a special treat for your performance, so why ruin the moment by telling them it's been done before? Kinda weird, don't ya think?
Unless you can explain what you mean better... with better grammar this time, that is. I'm out.

Justy - January 10, 2005 01:09 PM (GMT)
some of my stuff got revealed=(
[Ling] - January 10, 2005 01:33 PM (GMT)
We all did have some of our arsenal doomed. :(
M.A.D. - January 11, 2005 05:03 AM (GMT)
 i did not watch it, will it repeat, but i think it is ok, because that nothing new under the sun, but magic is skill + props+acting. So do not worry too much when some of the wonderful acts been show, i know all of us will be able to come out some thing more creative then when we begin.
Out learn the wolf.............

that day we signed a petition wats it for?
Desmond - January 11, 2005 07:02 AM (GMT)
BTW is the show over or will there b more in the future? ;)
GordonLi - January 11, 2005 01:40 PM (GMT)
this is a one-episode thing, there isnt anymore in the series, but who knows, they may expose more...
my friends who watched it thought that the show was lame (meaning, they think the secrets are too simple to be true, or that psychics dont do those). thats good.
just a note though: but just because we may have other stuff to perform doesnt justify exposure.
heartsofclubs - January 11, 2005 04:38 PM (GMT)
Great post from all of you ;)
I reflect upon how i would react if i were a spectator. IMO, it's best to stop doing the note magic for sometime. Laymen out there would soon forget all about it ;)
All this might just be to convince us.. We can see that leakages are getting high these days. Did you guys hear about a chinese magic show sometime at night, exposing magic tricks?
It might come to a point, laymen would just be unbothered with magic. To them, it's a waste of time being cheated by the very fast moves. I had been into convo. with quite a few and the response i get from a couple of them is," Aii yah.. I know magic lah. It's all just moving fast and misdirecting us."
Channel 5 gets alot of money from such exposure.. There might be more in future. Till then, have a great time.
