I thought i'll just post a quick review of this show here before the aliens drag me away again...
I watched the Just Kiki Kidding evening show on Sunday (29th June). It was actually not strictly a magic show. Yes, there were magic acts, but there's also an equal amount of non-magic comedy acts. It's actually 2 interleaving acts in 1 show. A magic show and a ongoing comedy drama act involving a certain "Mrs Naidu".
I shall talk about the magic part 1st.
All the acts are obviously polished regularly performed acts. I don't remember all the magic acts now so I'll just recall some of those that I do remember.
The show opened with Kiki's regular opening act, which local magic fans should be quite familiar with. Entertaining and well polished, albeit not much surprise there. Then was a magic drawing board act, balloon swallowing, an d'lite act, a couple of snow storms, and a few comedy magic pieces. Actually, all the pieces had heavy comedy in it's presentation.
The guest performers include Danny Koh with his "Flame of Asia" act. Nique Tan and Danny Koh presented a Spirit Cabinet act, and Francis Ang with a stage illusion act.
The magic itself were all nice and and smooth, but for magic fans, there's no big surprises or cut throat technicalities to wow at.
What really impressed me thou was the comedy and entertainment factor of all the acts. I have to say Kiki really has very good comic timing and it shows thru.
The comic presentation was very well weaved into the presentation and doesn't come across as forced or over rehearsed. Yes, there were a few stock punch lines, but generally all comic elements are very updated and well delivered.
I thought it's the satires, especially, were really HILARIOUS.
My two favorite acts are a very "dynamic" presentation of balloon twisting act and a very "wu li tou" watermelon act. I will not describe them here because it's the type of joke that when reiterated sounds lame, but when seen is side splitting. I was roaring so loud during these 2 acts till I think my date was getting a little embarrassed.
Another pleasent little surprise that evening was Francis Ang's illusion act. I have not had the opportunity to see his work previous so it's the 1st time i see him performing but I heard he was mostly a close up hobbyist.
To be very honest, his illusions pieces are "pretty standard stuff" (as my date put it), as in they are very regularly seen and performed items. There was a little dancing cane, a shadow box, and a spike box.
Again, there's nothing wrong with the performance, which was very smooth and well-rehearsed, just that it's regularly seen.
But what i really liked thou is his stage demeanor which came across to me as a quietly confident persona which was quite naturally interesting to watch. And the pacing of the acts were, in my humble opinion, VERY well balanced! There wasn't too much unnecessary fan-fare of too much jumping and running around and "photo opportunity" poses, but enough theatric body language and movement to keep things dramatic. No unnecessarily long "(visual) explainations", but doesn't rush thru the act too. Very just right.
Onto the comedy parts.
The comedy act revolves around a certain Mrs Naidu, her son and his friends.
The skits were purely comic in motive and conceptualisation, and not meant to be really theatric drama so no real "plot", no conflict-resolution, no character development that kinda thing. Yet, it doesn't come across as draggy or random as it could when you think someone is "trying too hard".
Hilarious was all it tried to be, and hilarious it was.
They had the audience really roaring at more than a few injunctions and was very entertaining.
The actors are obviously professional put up a great performance. The comedy were very effectively written into the script, and i thought the comic writing was really fantastic. At the end of the night, my date voted Mrs Naidu was her favourite act of the evening.
Overall. Hilarious.

I will say this is the BEST theatre show I've seen so far!!!! Not sure if Lawrence and Priscilla can beat his show in terms of entertainment value! =) I'll get to judge that soon!
