Title: Kids Magic And Ventriloquism
Description: I’m totally just a beginner
dee - January 11, 2005 10:07 AM (GMT)
Hi Magic Bro and Sister!
My name is dee. Located in Jakarta, Indonesia (umm..not the one that affected by the tsunami).
I’m a teacher, both in preschool and Sunday school. Recently, I was just realized about the effectiveness on doing or perform magic as a visual aid of teaching children. Than, I’m starting to learn magic now. I’m totally just a beginner. So far...i was just reading a local magic introduciton book (authored by the local senior magician). And also learn and practicing some free tricks from the internet (I’ve got less than 10 tricks, rite now).
About the SMC, I’ve take a look around the forum and read some posts. Considering the advice and suggestions of most the advance member here, I conclude that books and DVD are the best source to learn magic tricks for a beginner like me (I guess!)
------Sorry I dunno where should I post this kind of questions in this forum. Dunno what kind of magic are kids / gospel magic nor ventriloquism. Coz Also I found no discussion on it here!-----
My special interest is on Kids Magic (gospel magic included) and Ventriloquism. Well...i’m not gonna do magic for entertainment performance but more to become a wonderful visual teaching aid. These are my ultimate goal. But seems like I’m just so far away from it rite now. I’ve got no basic skill in magic yet.
My questions:
1.Where should I start be a better “magic” teacher?
2.Should I master all the basic skills of magic (improve my sleight of hands, etc) for using it only in teaching. Or should I explore the whole just like entertainer leaner?
3.If u guys wanna told me to read a book or video. Which one is good or even best for my special interest of magic? And most important is how can I get those stuffs, regarding my place in Indonesia?
With the less of budget, Is there any used magical books, video, or item we can get w/ special price?
Well…I have to say: I’m happy to be a member of this forum.
Comments, Idea, Sharing, and suggestion are welcome……..
Regards,
dee

1.When u become better, more advanced in skills. When your patter is flawless, your sleight of hand is smooth and invisible. When your misdirection and all this are pretty good. When u know a variety of tricks. Ranging from Cards,Coins,Silks, and even thumbtips.
2.That depends, IF u want to be a REAL magic teacher. Meaning, teaching magic for a living. Or u just want to be a magic teacher to teach your friends and students. I think ure probably wanting to teach ur students and stuff. Maybe make an optional course for the ppl who attend Sunday School?
maybe charge $2 for a 1 hour course? then the money will be use to buy decks and stuff for ur course students
So you go improve ur handlings and stuff... ok.
3. it depends really, coins cards.. there are so many books. just name and ppl will tell u.
coin - bobo modern coinmagic
card - expert at the card table , royal road to card magic
beginner course - mark wilson's complete course to magic [targetted for beginners who know little things]

Welcome to the forums man ~
Coke $2 for an hour course ? come on man, jack up those prices, is that the price of what other people will appericate ?
i doubt so, and for an hour course you can at least teach everything in e.g Born to perform.

Hello dee, welcome here and enjoy your stay. ;)

i dont think u should be teaching magic to every kid .. magic is something that needs alot of pratice .many unlike us wouldnt bother to pratice afther they know the secret and would go around exposing magic. mayb u could teach them to do a charlie cut or something like that.only if they mastered it then teach them something else .. go easy on them.. dont tell them a whole load of sleighs and ask them to pratice..they would definitely give up.if they cant do a charlie cut, do u think they would bother to learn a pass or a proper DL? trust me, only 1 out of 6 people would bother to actually pratice rather then just knowing the secret.to start of with magic i think books should be good but i prefer dvd =p hate books .. no offence to book lovers :P

Hiya Dee!
You can first try something for beginners to pick up knowledge on magic, and with the knowledge you have, start fabricating something creative. You'll have to first understand that magic isn't something that you can create a big impact with overnight. Like every other art, you'll need to adapt and have a feel for it before you'll be adequately prepared.
The reason for this is simple: In playing the role of a prospective teacher, you'll have to be good at what you do. A couple of tricks a month may suffice for your adult friends, but children are very much different; they are inquisitive, and have hyperactive intellects. Children have a natural ability to absorb, process and yearn for mental and visual information at a much higher rate than adults, so if you're only prepared to show them a trick or two in a week or if you're repetitive, chances are you'll not generate enough interest to successfully capture their interests to the fullest extent of your advantage.
Ventriloquism sounds good, because of the affinity that kids have towards puppets. You can use it as an alter ego too. But it's kinda tough (the lingual aspect of it) to be fully coherent especially in the early stages of your learning it.
Herein are the answers that I suggest in accordance to your questions:
1. Be a magician yourself. Pick it up not just for the sake of your profession, but allow a small part of your daily life to be involved in it. After that, every single minute and hour used for practising will no longer be just a teaching obligation, but a sheer pleasure because it comprises of an art that you love.
2. Once you can get to the stage of your magical growth as mentioned in the first answer, the solution to question number 2 is very obvious. You won't just stop at simple sleights...you'll very naturally and unabashedly yearn for more.
3. I haven't been to Indonesia yet (other than the casino in Batam...lol), so I really can't offer any useful resources for magical material, but if you're looking for books, have you considered trying a good library? They may have free resources in there I guess.
As for DVDs, you may want to check out different forums or even Ebay for video-related instructional material. Those who are selling used DVDs usually let go of them at very low prices compared to if you were to buy them brand new. If you can locate a local magic store, chances are you'll know a few people who want to sell or trade their stuff. Check out your local telephone directory for such stores. That was how I found my first magic store over in Singapore. :D
As for special interest, I would advise you to keep an open mind and cover the basics before you decide on that. You'll need time to immerse yourself into magic before you develop a certain liking for a particular area of the art. And even so, nothing's stopping you from venturing into a different magical category once you specialise in one right? Take your time on this. Learn what you can but don't jump the gun.
Just be sure that you have the basics mastered properly. They are a lot more important than the advanced techniques because they are the core of which you build your entire magical foundation around.
Hope you'll find this helpful! ;)

Hi Dee
i am M.A.D. a helper in Sunday school. I fully agree with you the use of the visual aid of teaching children. I’m starting to learn hand trick or magic since 1996 till today I’m still just a beginner. i do read magic introduciton book, learn from few Gospel Illusion class & look at the website. And this year the advice and suggestions of most the advance member here, I purchase a set of DVD are the best source to learn stage magic tricks for a beginner like us.
Your questions:
1.Where should I start be a better “magic” teacher?
What you do you means are you you saying using "magic" as for object lesson teaching?
2.Should I master all the basic skills of magic (improve my sleight of hands, etc) for using it only in teaching. Or should I explore the whole just like entertainer leaner?
As for me i will say "no" because you will not able to learn all or be best, but you will improve at time go by but the important will be willing to learn from anyone you will learn some thing new everytime.
3.If u guys wanna told me to read a book or video. Which one is good or even best for my special interest of magic? And most important is how can I get those stuffs, regarding my place in Indonesia?
For this i had no answer too.
With the less of budget, Is there any used magical books, video, or item we can get w/ special price?
Come over to Singapore we might able to help you.

How can I learn the vent. Is it works w/ books and vid.? Or need the private live tutor from expert?
As we have many genre of magic, where children, gospel, & ventriloquism are joined? Are they standing on their own or else? Especially on children’s what are people usually do as a routines?

1996-2005...WOW it's quite a long time.
Do the progress have something to do w/ our talent?
What do u meant by "a beginner". Do ppl here are all the beginner?
Or u might meant...u and me are the beginner?
what do u think...are the beginner good enough to perform as a teacher?
Ya..exactly u thought!
I meant...being a teacher, who put magic as a one of his teaching visual aid.
Nice to know someone also involve in sunday school like I do
I thinks we can share more things about magic and stuff in the near future.
Singapore…never been there, but heard a lot from several friends there. I wish I could go outing w/ the other member. Btw...How is the 1st SMC competition? Goin well..ha?
@illusionist...ya some useful helps, i really need them.
dee - January 12, 2005 11:34 AM (GMT)
Anyway…about books or videos, which one are good for my special interest on children’s magic and ventriloquism as a beginner?
Under my budget constraint, I would be happy and welcome if used books, videos, or items related are offered to me? About how to get or sending those stuffs….still wondering!
And maybe the list of useful links and downloadable freebies tricks would be also a benefit. Coz these are truly my first step into magic.
I would be very happy to learn from you all.
regards,
dee

What do u meant by "a beginner". Do ppl here are all the beginner? yes, myself was the beginner for road of magic, as a beginner good enough to perform as a helper, that why i still address myself as helper and not teacher
Nice to know you also involve in sunday school like I do we will share more things about magic and stuff in the near future.
