Title: Any Recommendations?

madnessman - September 21, 2008 06:22 AM (GMT)
I'm looking for some new material to learn. Anybody know anything good? Ordering online shouldn't be a problem my father is going on a business to trip in November. Right now I'm trying to work my way through The Trilogy (Buck twins) and Project (Daniel Garcia). Two really good DVDs which are packed with magic. Books are OK but I think I learn much better from DVDs. So... Any recommendations?

muscleaxl - September 22, 2008 05:24 PM (GMT)
First of all, what's your level at? From the DVDs you have now, you don't look like a beginner... unless you went straight for those 2. We wouldn't want to insult your skills by suggesting some easy stuff.

As Axl says its important to know your level but i would recommend the following anyway

Party Animal by Matthew J Dowden
Still Fancy a Pot of Jam - James Brown
Menu of Miricles - James Prince

Something for every level, really entertaining tricks and with those 3 DVDs you could have a career in magic. There is no flourishing though

Sorry for the late-ish response. Exams have been a pain in the... neck.

I'm not a beginner. :D I've been doing magic for around 6 years now but it's been an on off kind of thing so I'm not as good as most magicians with 5-6 years of experience. I can pick up the tricks in Project pretty easily but the Trilogy is challenging me. So many sleighs and moves I have never seen or tried.

My flourishing is really limited. Just a couple of moves from Kev. I don't really care if there is flourishing in the dvd/book actually. There are lots of free tutorials online.

My I suggest anything from John Bannon his card plots are great.

Anything from the late great Jack Parker

Also you get so much more from a book then a DVD, thats just mt opinion.

Good Luck
Remember have fun !!

James Swain and some really good stuff and he has a new DVD out, if not very soon. Darwin Ortiz has excellent plots and well thought out presentations and routines, although a lot of routines require a table. It depends on the style and sort of presentation you are going for. More flashy direct visual effects or full presentation plot-based effects?

hmmm... online purchasing is not worth it as most of it can be found :)

I hope you're not referring to what i'm thinking. We should always get our stuff from the right resources, never pirated or those stuff that do not credit the right persons.

That aside, Madnessman, everyone has given good suggestions and now i think it depends on which styles and presentation types that you perform to help you to decide on what to get.

I don't think those recommended can be found in the libraries. These are not basic card books/ DVDs that can be found in the library. You will have to buy them from legit dealers.

I found some but was in chinese version, maybe most of your go for English ones :)

luneymooney - October 18, 2008 03:55 AM (GMT)
Those are basic card magic books, I used to read those too. Definitely NOT the James Swain, James Brown, Matthew J stuff that you can find.

Anyways, i think we are going :off: .

Hmm... I wonder what kind of chinese titles you can find in library?

The only chinese magic books I ever found there are those "magic-for-kids" books by some Taiwanese magicians.

Which is essentially what muscleaxl is talking about. Lu Chen (that's the way he spells his english btw) is a FISM winner, but his books are essentially for the amateurs, not for the serious magician. His books have pretty good stuff, but definitely not the stuff that any serious card man is looking at... unless he's just came out with a book that i don't know of. Similarly for Robin.

jiawen - October 20, 2008 10:48 AM (GMT)
Yup, just giving comments and probably that was the best book you can find free in library :D

muscleaxl - October 20, 2008 06:19 PM (GMT)
Actually I ever found Bobo's Coin Magic at Jurong library but it was too deep for me at that time.

For those who might be interested can go look for it... if it's still there.

MagicalLobo - October 23, 2008 04:09 AM (GMT)
Personally, I think Bobo Modern Coin Magic is a good investment. We might need to refer back to it often when we practise. It is called the Bible of Coin Magic lol. Having it in libraray don't seem like a good idea to me, any layman can know the secrets.

muscleaxl - October 23, 2008 09:13 AM (GMT)
I think it's fine.

Most laymen would not bother looking up for magic books and even if they happen to stumble upon it, it is still too dry for them to read. Not as if it is as interesting as Harry Potter.

I should know... I couldn't finish it.

jiawen - October 23, 2008 10:46 AM (GMT)
Hmm find one day and i'll go find the book :D

Louis - December 20, 2008 03:15 AM (GMT)
Like like the national library is really increasing its range of books . Regarding layman reading the book , they can go to kinokyuniya or even borders to buy it .
