Title: Berglas Effect

Maddened - October 3, 2008 06:23 AM (GMT)
So quiet here... Everyone busy with life huh?

Let's see if I can start something here...

Anyone know how to do the Berglas Effect?

Ok kidding! If you do know, please PM me and not shout it out to the world.

But more importantly, just want to ask everyone what they think of the Berglas Effect.

An extremely clean ACAAN was like the Holy Grail of Mentalism and Card magic not so long ago, but I don't know, interest seemed to have died off. But hey! What other mentalism effect can be so strong and so dramatic?

If anyone regularly watches that Taiwanese Big Brother (Da Ge Da) show on SCV, they'll see that the Lu Chen guy perform a variation of the Berglas Effect about two months ago. Marc Paul has his own variation - extremely clean too.

Berglas himself of course has never revealed how he does his, and it looks like he never will. I heard that you can't even find it in Brittland's book on Berglas. Then again even if it's there, a second-hand copy of that limited edition book is at least $1000... that is if you can find one for sale.

Anyone here performs this regularly? Or has seen any version performed close to Berglas's standard? Or have any thoughts to add?

David Berglas's The Berglas Effect is indeed the cleanest and most impromptu looking ACAAN I've ever seen. The first time I saw it performed was during SMC's gathering at Toa Payoh Mac and it was perfomed by our Ironman Enrico.

He whipped out his Masters Deck and passed round the table as he perfomed several ACAAN. At that point in time I could'nt figure how was it possible. He continiously performed ACAAN without re-adjusting the deck. It was just too clean. Later he did tell us that it's called the Berglas Effect and that you'll need to understand how David Berglas adopted the principle that he created.

Till date, I don't think David Bergals ever revealed his method. He did have a write up on his Bergals effect in his book "The Mind and Magic of David Berglas". I heard this is like his autobiography. As mentioned by Maddened, it's out of print. If you have it, safeguard it as it really a gem...

Maddened, if Enrico pops by one of our gathering. We can probably have the privilege to see him perform it again... It's really a holy grail of ACANN..

So cool... Pity I missed it. I think I know how Enrico did it though...

He summoned the spirit of Berglas and allowed Berglas's ghost to possess him and perform the trick. Then after that Berglas's spirits will leave Enrico's body and join back into the ether stream...

Actually if he turns up for the next meeting, let's just surround him and beat the secret out of him. :P

Yah... I think you got it, this must be how he did it. What a way...

hi everyone,

till date i do not believe in Berglas Effect. I think he is only sucessful in marketing that effect. Of course, i saw a couple of youtube videos of magicians performing ACAAN, but as it is a tv show, it could be staged.

somebody has to do this on ME...for me to swear by its effect.

regards.

The closest ACAAN to the Berglas Effect in my opinion would be Destiny by Tommaso Guglielmi. I've bought the ebook and honestly speaking it's ingenious and clean, brings mentalism to a whole new level but damn hard to execute; not suitable for a newbie magician like me. :(

oh...you bought that e-book?

I just bought it too. And i was pretty disappointed. It is a waste of my money. It is not as described as from www.imentalism.com.

regards.

The Berglas Book is on Martinka's auction now.

Go check it out. If you have the depth, get one and keep it till you die!!

lol.

I have skimmed through pages of it. It really cool. Just to describe one of his effects I can remember:

1. tie milk bottle to a rope
2. hang bottle off a balcony
3. grab a pear
4. sign the pear
5. throw pear off balcony
6. pull bottle up showing signed pear in bottle.

"The impossible we do immediately, miracles take a little longer" - David Berglas, in describing this effect.

Anyway, the writeup for the Berglas effect is really lengthy... Truly one of the classics in magic... Maybe if I can get a glimpse of the book again... lol.

Hi all,

I have not looked much into this yet, but this may provide some insipration to achieve the Berglas effect:

I guess the correct method will be the performer who use now such as Lu Chen, David Berglas and Marc Paul. Only they know how the trick works.

Well i came up with an ACAAN which is very similiar to the Berglas effect but of course not as great yet. It is an ungimmicked version with just a regular pack of cards. In fact it does not require any sleight of hand techniques. However it is considerably difficult to perform.

I performed it once to Mr Enrico Varella, Uncle Bob and a few others on one occasion during a magic workshop for beginners organised by a chinese magazine and Mr Varella was quite impressed.
I was supposed to attempt it on stage that day but the spectator was not listening to my instructions properly which was rather disruptive for the effect and i was a quite nervous myself so i did another acaan effect by Daniel Garcia instead.Man ...that was a nerve wrecking moment.

Anyway the effect i came up with goes something like this:
A deck is inside the deckbox and is placed in full view.
1) Spectator is asked to name any card . Complete Free Choice
2) Spectator is asked to name any number. Complete Free Choice.
3) The deck is taken out of the deck and the spec is asked to deal down as accordingly and the chosen card is found at the chosen number.
4) The deck can be examined and is just a regular deck .

I also heard Alain Nu has a version of ACAAN but apparently which takes months of practice but is highly similar to the Berglas effect.SO you guys might be interested in purchasing that.

Umm, not sure if this is considered necro-ing, if yes let me know mods.
Anyway theres a book out right now... don't know if anyone in sg ordered it yet. For me, I'm considering it...

The Berglas Effect by Richard Kaufman

I just got the book.

Basically, the books covers 3 main things.
1) Think of a card - asking a spectator to thinking of a card and reveal it.
2) At any number - not sure yet, as i haven't read till there
3) Berglas effect - how it is done.

3 DVD are included as supplements to the book.

Till what I read so far, he introduce some ideas which is worth exploring.

Anyone else got the book?

Adrian
