Title: Got Caught...

Pseudo - September 19, 2004 08:27 AM (GMT)
I think this is a quiet popular thread among other forum too. I started this thread cos we are Singaporeans. The people we perform to are different. Perhaps we can share each of our individual experiance when we are caught.

I'm always very worried when I do my DL. I'd screwed up before by doing a TL but wasn't caught. I just stood there looking at my card like there's a change or something is going on. I flip back de card and carried on to DL.

I did my riffle pass and my cards are all messed up. Always very nervous when showing people but when alone, I can do pretty good riffle pass.

How about meeting tough cookies? Everyone seems to be a tough cookies to me. I'm still not experiance enough.

Care to share your first time perfoming magic to people?

What kind of tough cookie have you met and how did you deal with it?

hmm, that's quite common...
when pple say "i know how u do it", normally i'll just look at them calmly and ask them "are u sure?", then smile and ignore them from there on.
when doing DLs, if i get caught n pple insist to check the card, i'll just distract them for a fraction of a sec n do any clean up move that's suitable n hand them the card. if they when to check the deck after they check the card, sure thing!
i'll have already do a pass under their noses when they are bz checking if that card's a double. Cleaned!
of coz i cant continue whatever trick i am doing then. normally i'll just pretend to be really upset and say since they dont believe the magic, no point doing anymore.
this is the time when they got real curious n most of the time will apologise or bug me to do some more stuffs.
from this point i think it's the best time to do some self working tricks or something real simple with good, strong effect. reason being they will be paying lots more attention here, so need to bring their guards down n amaze them more.
i've got quite gd chance to practise this since my gf is quite a tough case, always when to check this and that. :P

i think the best thing to do when u get burnt is to stay cool. i like the idea of sometimes act fustrated n hand them the deck with real big actions pretending really angry... a lot of things can be done here. remember big actions cover smalls

LOL.....yes, gfs have a thing about checking everything

I agree with jamkid there. Even if your spec really caught you out and know how it's done, dun bother denying it too much, but whatever you do, dun confirm it. Just smile and change topic or move on to something else.

A big art in magic is spec management. It's to get your spec in the "mood" to be receptive of something magical. One thing i found useful (esp in a group) when a spec gets too nosy or vocal ("can i shuffle it?", "can you show me that card/coin again?", "can i not put there?" , "can i choose a different card?", "show me your other hand" etc etc) is i will jokingly hand them the card/coin/whatever and say "maybe you want to do this trick instead". It is important to do this in a joking manner instead of controntational because our main aim is to entertain afterall, and it's always good to have the specs on your side.
I also found it's better to have "stricter" control by default. By this i mean, if in the mist of a card trick, even if the deck CAN be shuffled by the spec, i wouldn't allow it if they asked for it instead of being offered by me. Reason being i feel that once you give it a little, it encourages the questions and requests, and more troublesome ones will come. So unless it is like the last trick you are gonna do or near the last, i just simple say "It's ok, i can manage." or something to that effect. If they insist, then it's the "maybe you would like to do this instead". :D Basically i wanna encourage them that it's most beneficial to them to sit back, take instructions, and enjoy the resulting effects.

And if i get caught out, i definitely wouldn't repeat the trick again. Unless i'm super sure the spec wouldn't know what's going on and/or didn't even realise something has gone wrong. It just gives them another chance to figure it out more or confirm whatever they think they saw.

Yes spectator management is really really important..... Tips on how to protect your angles.... if u are not comfortable with something, u can ask the spectator to move to another spot. lets say if you have a move that would be exposed if a spectator were to be behind you, just ask the person to join the group and not be shy. usually once they hear this they would just oblige you and join the group.... If they really dun want to move then you will have to move..... Usually if you are able to bring them into "ur World" they would be tough...

Tips to handle haglers....
immediately do a self working card trick
or a trick called one for the money by bill goldman

Self working card tricks should be blow them off... if they are still skeptical well perform one for the money.... TOTALLY BLOWS THEM AWAY....

CLJ - September 26, 2004 04:06 AM (GMT)
On the topic of hecklers, you all should watch Huron handle the hecklers he experiences in his performances. It's priceless. :D :D :D :D

Just one example...
"I know how that was done!"
huron: (dangles heckler's watch above head while the rest of the crowd laughs at heckler) "Oh really?"
"Um..."
"Well, then do you know how THIS was done?" (shows heckler watch)
"@(&$@&$I&@$(&!!!"

Heckler gets laughed out of performance by rest of the people or just remains silent throughout following that. Huron continues blowing people away. It's hilarious watching it. Everyone loves it. Well, maybe not the heckler. :D Or another example:

"you just lifted 2 cards as 1!"
Huron: "WHATT?? (acts incredulous) Don't give me that 2 card bullsh*t!"
*does a blatant double right in front of their face and does some flourishy stuff with it* "Look at this, this is just 1 card, right?"
"yeah, that's 1 card"
Huron then does something cool and *changes* the card.

Spectators freak out. It's all a matter of presentation and audience management. :D (which Huron is a god at)

I'm very curious on the person you'd mentioned. I'm wondering if Huron has a video of himself perfroming tricks to people.

Or does anyone have have any video of yourself or any good magicians performing tricks on people.

I believe we can learn alot from viewing it.

Some information here for the unintiated... :D :D :P

Huron is an awesome magician from my school (ACS I). He's a magic genius and if you guys had seen Fire in the Hole, you would know. He created a totally new torn and restored card concept called Fire in the Hole about 2 years back and has been working on it and after his Os, he'll be producing a dvd on it and many other torn and restored card ideas that he has come up with, notably stuff like Making Ends Meet which is a mismatch piece by piece restoration that kicks ass, and Hotspot. Huron's vids have been distributed around the internet quite widely already, and Andi Gladwin himself (I think) loved Fire in the Hole, as did many many many other people. Huron's like the Singaporean equivalent of Gregory Wilson. His performances are so freaking dynamic and he puts out so much energy. No one entertains a crowd like he does. His presentation and crowd management is awesome.

As for Th3 man, Bone himself, I'm surprised that so many of you haven't heard of him. :D :D He probably has the best hands in Asia. His site Cheaterscheater was one of the most popular video sharing sites and had thousands of members. it was shut down because of a virus but will be back up in October. If you want a testament of his skill, PM me for some of his videos or something and you'll see what I mean. He's a super flourisher and no one has the style or presence that he has. When he starts flourishing in a room, EVERYBODY notices. :D :D

Kevin is an awesome dude here in Singapore as well. He's like the equivalent of the Bucks here in Singapore. Check out his site at www.mredux.tk and you'll see what I mean. his magic and flourishing is KICKASS, especially the way he blends his flourishing into magic. If you ever go the magic castle, and see a vietnamese-chinese-american-singaporean with an american accent doing crazy, abstract flourishes and these long, complex routines, that's Kevin. :D

Anyway, me, Huron, kevin, Bone, daryl, Justin, Cai, Sylvester, and several others hang out at the magic castle occasionally so you may just catch us there some time. haha. :D

*end digression*

Hey guys, about time I posted here: CLJ's crapping, in fact I am a epileptic paraplegic with no eyebrows.. I'm "nubs"

"getting caught".. happens to all of us, especially in this environment. What you gotta do is just go for the moment: as a magician, you gotta make the impossible possible, and recovering from a screw-up is one of those things. For example:

"I saw it!"
"Well, I saw it too... that makes the both of us!"

Meanwhile, just do a jumbo load or something and blast a FISM flash in their faces. It's entertainment, people... make it happen. Live for the moment. East some s'mores. Hehe.
