Legerdemain 2010

In 2007, our magic fraternity in Singapore witnessed something extraordinary. A magic competition specifically for Close Up and Parlour magic was created to recognize the artful dedication of these creative individuals in this elusive art form. 2 years have passed, and several of our Prize winners and contestants have gained significant fame and thus, flourished a career through magic. Now something bigger is coming your way….

Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m pleased and very excited to inform you that Legerdemain 2010 is scheduled to be held in June 2010 and we would like to inform everyone the events that would lead us to the big day itself.

Gaining from the feedback that we received in 2007, there would now be several changes as compared to Legerdemain 2007. Below is some teaser information for your reading pleasure. Please pass on the information to your fellow enthusiasts that the time is here to start mastering your techniques and honing your act.

Magic Act: 2 competition categories. One being Close-Up Magic and the other being Parlour Magic. Here’s brief description in our classification between Close-Up and Parlour Magic for this competition.

Close-Up magic would be defined as an act that requires the performer to be sitting or standing behind the table and a camera is required to shoot on the performer’s hands in order to project his act to the audience at large.

Parlour Magic would be defined as any other act that can be easily visible within 3m of the performer without the aid of a camera.

Please do not be worried about whether your act should be Close-Up or Parlour. You can sign up for either category and do your act as per normal. The organizing committee will use our discretion to categorise your act accordingly once you’re through to the finals. Please be rest assured that there will not be any form of biasness or prejudice. All acts will be accessed impartially.

Number of Final acts: As there are 2 categories now, we are tentatively looking at 5 acts for Close-Up and 5 acts for Parlour. Hence, making a total of 10 acts for the Legerdemain 2010 Finals.

Length of Act: For the audition act, we are looking at a 5min act. As for the Final act, we’re looking at a 10min act and the contestant’s original 5min audition act must be part of the Final 10min act. Failure to meet this requirement would render the contestant to be disqualified.

Prizes: With 2 categories of performances, there will be a Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up for reach category. Hence making a total of 6 prize winners.

Type of Prizes: We are currently in the midst of discussing with our sponsors on the list of prizes. However, please be rest assured that the prizes will not fail to impress.

Nominal fee: As per the previous arrangement, a nominal fee will be collected from all registrants of the contest. The final fee amount will be disclosed once we have finalized the details.

Who can participate: The Competition is open to the general public.

Age eligibility: The minimum age of eligibility for this contest is 13. You must be 13 as of the year 2010 in order to participate. Parental consent is compulsory for any participant whose age is 16 years and below as of year 2010.

Auditions: This is the most important information to all. Audition will be held in Dec-2009. Venue and timing will be confirmed once we’ve finalized it. The objective here is for all interested to think through what you would like to perform. From now till Dec-2009, you have 6 months to fine tune your act. This is definitely considerable amount of time to come up with a Close-up or Parlour act.

As per our previous competitions, the following information regarding stooges, fire and smoke will be important for all participants.

No stooges – audience volunteers will be provided if you need them. Inform the organizers in advance during the finals of how many audience members you need to help you with your act. It will be arranged for you.

No fire effects of any kind.

Smoke effects - Smoke effects or gimmicks are allowed only if it is not ignition based (i.e. no heat involved).

Again, this is to give everyone a heads up on the Biggest magic event that will happen in 2010. Please help us to pass this message around to all your friends and family members.

Please feel free to post here if you have any queries.

Cheers

This is really cool, after so long, the competition is finally back on track!!!

I got a little suggestion. I feel that "No Stooges" rule should be taken out. Mainly because, in the layperson's view, they won't know whether a stooge is involved in the effect. And if a stooge is required for the effect to be strong, I feel in magic term, it is still consider magic.

But that doesn't mean that I fully support people using stooges, I will recommend limiting the number of stooges and the magician judges are already informed that stooge are involved.

Limit the stooge number to be only 1.

And the judges are already informed that stooge will be involved. So the judges can judge whether the magic is stronger or weaken because of the stooge element inside.

Also, the laymen judge are not informed of the stooge, so that he/she will give an impartial judgement of the magic.

This is just my suggestion.

I disagree.

This is a competition. We are looking at skill and ability, not really a show for laypeople.

I don't know if the 'no stooge' rule is trying to limit this but this just came across my mind.

Even if it is just one stooge, I guess the power of the stooge is huge in some ways. Just like your accomplice on/by the card table. If stooges are allowed, I suppose contestants may try to magnify their Magic by planting stooges. Such as presenting impossible mentalism and having them as outs. (even if it is just one)

Like Axl mentioned, skill and ability is seeked here. I don't think a stooge brings out your skill and ability.

Sure... first, with one stooge, I will make sure that the stooge is a fellow magician who will help me do all the secret work required. Secondly, I'll ask to learn his signature so as to achieve even more impossible effects.

With a little more creativity, I'm sure everyone can think of even better ways to abuse stooging.

It is not fair to use stooging in a magic competition. Ability is what is being measured. In FISM, participants guilty of the use of stooges will be disqualified. Yes, stooging may perhaps allow an effect to be stronger but please consider the negative consequences of it as well.

If they allow stooge in a magic competition, my grandmother can also take part.

Hmm.. True. Agreed with the various points that was mentioned about it.

I guess we stick to the "No Stooge" rule then.

Cheers to the upcoming competitors.

Great to see our members having interests in this event. It's a good platform to show all your friends and family that you're not just a bedroom magicians. It's time to show that you mean business... :D

Invisible & LoyaLover: I'm looking forward to see your names in my participants list... ^_^

I will be there.

One question though, are the mods allowed to take part as well? Or is it like the last time?

The same rules apply Matt.

But if a Mod wants to take part, he will not be part of the organising committee.

Don't worry; we're very very transparent about the way things are handled. You should know Matt - you were at the last one! :D

I'm working on splicing together a video from the last event. I'll have it up soon so everyone can check things out!
